You (Netflix)
Is You prestige TV lol
It's like soap opera level schlock, but it can be entertaining
prestige TV
soap opera level schlock
:same-picture: mostly, but one tends to have more :awooga: :libertarian-alert: :hypersus:
It's literally a Lifetime original. The whole joke of the show is "Serial Killer Soap"
I like to think that they managed to elevator pitch this show and the execs at Lifetime had no idea what they were actually funding. There's got to be a reason they were dropped after one season.
Will give credit to the lead actor on being very vocally against people liking his character too. The show always kinda read to me like satire of the modern obsession with True Crime. Something that very quickly devolved as the satire went over people heads and they got horny for Joe.
I think Ozark and Orange is the New Black would count as prestige tv.
You is not though and also started out on Lifetime.
I actually liked Orange until it went off the deep end, which happened right around the time :hillary-contempt: lost the election.
I remember it getting better again in the last season, but the season before that was completely awful.
When the prisoner riot magically went to shit because Tasty's script said "make every possible mistake during the standoff now because :hillary-contempt: didn't win the election and those private prisons are staying open after all because she totally would have closed them because Obama promised" and all the inmates were carted off to super secret blackops locations and Susanne got totally flanderized from a believable character to a lazy "crazy" stereotype, I was out. Stopped watching.
A while now. Mindhunter and Beef come to mind. But they’re rare
But I mentioned Netflix because “you” is a generic title and wanted to have people filter it down if they go searching
This is one of my partner's favorite shows
So even in mobile with the subtitles barely legible, I knew exactly what they said
My partner is really into the books too, the guy who does the audiobook sounds a hell of a lot like Penn Badgley, it's wild
Are the books good if you've already seen the show? Was thinking of getting them as a gift.
They're pretty different than the show to be honest, especially once you get to the second book
Overall, she and I both enjoyed them and the show
It's good slop IMO. It's absolutely ridiculous but it's a fun watch, I think people just expect too much from the show because it markets itself as this serious horror thriller or whatever.
That's what I though too, but the 4th season was so bad I hadto stop watching
Eh I liked it, they kinda had no other choice but to really go crazy with it. Also I hope you got to the final plot twist of season 4, it's when it really gets extremely ridiculous.
I just hope they wrap it up next season, I can't imagine them keeping the momentum for 3 more seasons.
4… seasons? Lmao I’m only on the second one and thought it was enough for me
Frankly same but when I start watching something I have to finish it. Couldn't pull through on that though
:liberalism: you are even cooler than me in finding this treat subpar
The writing on Netflix shows has been driving me insane. It's as if their writers have never spoken to a person but have only read about the way people talk You and The Midnight Club in particular epitomize this trend.
It's a tiresome thought terminating cliche flung at people that disagree with each other, but I do think contemporary "prestige TV" writers are very online and don't really talk to other people offline very much and that's why the dialogue is often so stilted, quippy, and pretentious.
The new season really goes off the rails, brace yourself. Don't go in expecting quality TV, it's complete schlock but if you're fine with that it's gonna be fun.
