Have noticed a definite increase in posts in c/commrequest for subreddit specific comms. Also noticed posts about :libs: flocking to lemmy.

Can we please not? No site specific comms. No posts in the subreddits offering lifeboats.

We’re either going to be outnumbered by libs or awful ideological niche folks that are just going to completely ruin the entire vibe and function of the site.

It happened before (vcj). Don’t let it happen again.

I see no problem with the site being a lifeboat to some subs like TheDeprogram

deprogram gang would fit in with our general culture just fine, sometimes feels like r/deprogram is our new subreddit.

Yeah, it's more that there should be some discussion of each community beforehand so if something doesn't gel with what we already have we don't go for it.

Nah we should grow, absorb them culturally, and grow some more. All that matters is that mods are on-point.

Vegans didn't ruin the vibe, you fucking losers. It was your disgusting reaction to being asked not to exploit and murder others that ruined the vibe, just like when you all lost your shit about adding pronouns

Constantly rewriting the history of this website's historic abuse and harassment of multiple lifeboat communities really ruins the vibe for me

          abuse and harassment

They do mean something. Sorry you can't take this seriously enough to consider the communities y'all treated so relentlessly terribly that they had to leave if they weren't straight up banned

Here we go, getting called an asshole bc I won't accept history being rewritten about how a community I modded got harassed and abused off this site. That's called victim blaming btw. Sorry my tone wasn't good enough for y'all not to be bigoted

                  Here's the history:

                  1. Vegans have a comm on here that exists just fine
                  2. VCJ is invited
                  3. Massive drama ensues that keeps popping up every now and then

That's not the fucking history, revisionist loser. That's just what you tell yourselves so you never improve. VCJ was just the last community to get run off, not the first.

And vegans didn't cause the drama. You only tolerate us when we're silent and have no power because you hate nonhumans and you hate when you're asked to stop hurting others.

I take abuse and harassment seriously enough to not call every internet slapfight abusive.

A major part of this site's vibe is not conflating the internet with the real world, and at least recognizing that being terminally online is bad.

Didn’t people fight each other for a few months because someone started a book club and the absolute holy right to be lazy and never read theory was being misconstrued as ignoring the book’s trans rights subject matter?

Comms here function the opposite way to the way they do on reddit because of the number of users anyway, at the very least we should wait until things stabilize after the possible federation

This sites biggest mistake was getting rid of main.

Yes we know. Admin mods want other comms to get seen. But you need a large user base for that to happen and for them to be viable.

It's cart before horse thinking. Imo.

So people have been talking about federation for a while is there any estimate when that is going to happen ?

      • layla
        ·

Probably several months away. All I know is they aren't turning it on initially. Once the new site is up it'll be for the admins to decide with who to federate and when (I assume several months till Hexbear federates with another instance but I'm not privy to those conversations if they've been had)

This produces a walled garden of communists that literally do nothing but circlejerk among themselves. We need to be connected to and taking part in everything in order to have an effect upon it.

I don't know how anyone can believe that after watching the fascists grow from being absolutely fucking nothing into what they are today via the internet.

Like holy fucking shit half the people here would not be where they are currently ideologically if not for the work of others in the online space.

Nobody is saying not to organise offline as well ffs.

Like, what exactly do you expect to happen to the users across all the federated lemmys if all leftists disengage from it while all fascists engage with it? The space must be ideologically contested.

Lenin was essentially a newspaper editor in chief, and Internet forums have replaced newspapers for most people these days

Unfortunately, that means the next Lenin is going to be a mod

The fascist have grown because they are not purist.

The lefts biggest issue and largest hurdle is its demand for perfection from new commers. And if it's not perfection it's the belittling/hostility of people who ask or say things they don't realize are problematic.

Fascist take all. And they mold them. Unfortunately fascist are much more open to new commers and border line people. They have latched onto a message that works for many desperate people. That message being

                  It's their fault!

When a lot of times the left comes off as

                  It's your fault!

There's nothing wrong with reaching out, and for some subs it might make sense. For the majority though, there is probably a comm here already that can serve as a replacement.

To anyone coming here from reddit, one thing that's important to realize is that we're much more of a whole-site focused community than a sub/comm one. So if there's shit you want to post, you can just find somewhere it belongs and most people will see it.
