It's mostly for emulation but I do play Dark Souls and Monster Hunter on occasion so it needs to be somewhat responsive.

I've been playing BOTW and TOTK with a PS4 controller and the motion controls work perfectly
The buttons might be switched onscreen from what you're actually pushing, because they tend to register like Xbox controllers, but it's something you can muscle memory past
There are mods to replace the button prompts with your controller-correct ones if that interests you.
Yeah and use Steam Big Picture to set it up how you like. Like I unclicked the checkbox so the A/B/X/Y buttons are in xbox positions. For non-steam games I add the executable file to the steam library and launch from there.
If you come over you can borrow my Mad Catz controller with the cheese dust embedded in all the cracks that constantly drifts left (like me).
This is what I use, and like. It has a decent D-Pad, in a good location. I can also easily use it on my Switch.
I bought a steam controller for $5 when they were getting rid of stock. It’s good because for some games I can use the back buttons to do run or jump while still being able to move my camera. Also mouse joystick is neat when the game cooperates and doesn’t switch the button UI
But it’s not popular so there aren’t too many guides out there unlike the Xbox and DualShock. If you like tinkering to get the perfect setting, it’s neat. Otherwise it’s a pain in the ass.

Logitech Gamepad F310. Its cheap, but pretty durable, and functions well enough for everything I have used it for.
Felt quite big for my tiny hands personally. Awkward for holding triggers.

This is my go-to for emulators since it supports both DirectInput and XInput modes via the switch on the back, so it plays nicely with SNES9x, D-pad fuckiness aside.
8bitdo ultimate is my favorite controller and cheaper than the official console controllers

I'll also go with the 8bitdo Ultimate. I have the wired Xbox version and it might be the best controller I've ever used, thinking about getting the newer 2.4 GHz version to use with PC and Steam Deck. There's also a wired non-Xbox version if you want to save money and don't care about wireless. The cord on the Xbox version is really long, and I'm assuming the same is true for the PC one.
All the versions are around $35-50, most likely much more expensive in dollarydoos, but affordable for the quality.
PS4 controller? Should be cheaper now that the ps5 is out.
You can use the touchpad as mouse, witch is nice. The DS4 for Windows software should help for the very few, if any, games that have issues. It also has motion sensors in it, if you play any games that use them, and a 3.5mm headphone out.

i don't know how much they cost in aussie dollars, but could try looking for a second-hand one? they are pretty durable in my experienceedit: you can pick up a ps4 controller at JB Hi-Fi for $79 apparently
