    Reminder that the only proven causal link to autism is exposure to air pollution in vivo. It's a good point to bring up bc carbrains tend to be the ones pushing these vaccine conspiracies

    It's almost like autism is better understood now and kids aren't just called "slur" anymore because they're different

      Honestly in cases like this it’s warranted. I don’t want to backslide into medieval bullshit medicine

      We can't dismiss the possibility of a connection until we've conducted rigorous experiments. Let me go get my cutlass.

    Vax rates will go down and then diseases spread and then vax rates will go back up.

    Many people apparently must experience things first hand to fear them. It sucks and a lot of innocent people will be hurt, but Western governments are apparently allergic to forcing smart policy.

      I'm realizing this about Covid. For a lot of people it's just not a problem until it happens to them, or even if it has happened to them but it's not happening right now. I know someone who was hospitalized for like two weeks. All her hair fell out. She's right back to running around unmasked, travelling, everything.

    dang this seems pretty true, we should probably reshape society so that it isn't constantly punishing towards autistics and other neurodivergent folks :comfy-cool:

    It's such a "you couldn't make this up" that a large part of why Anti-Vax quackery spread so far and wide is that Oprah gave Jenny McCarthy a platform to talk about how much she hated her son (Excuse me, her son's autism. Yeah right) in front of millions and millions of people.

    Oprah has done so much damage by giving cranks and grifters and quacks a platform it's hard to overstate. A medium-famous model and actress comes on stage and says her son needs to be "cured" and now measles is back, Covid is spreading uncontrolled, all kinds of childhood illnesses are resurging, Polio has been found in the wild again. Fuck me.

    Like yeah, it's not all McCarthy's fault, but she was a major, major factor in spreading the concept widely. And Oprah could live a thousand lifetimes of penance and never account for how many people she's hurt.

    Still think its fucking scary that there are parents that would rather have their kids die of preventable illnesses than be alive with autism.

      :this::this::this::this::this:

      like the bigotry against autistic people is so automatic among these people that it's reflexive.
