so the petition was originally made by a french copywrite org (evil), which apparently spread it to multiple french film unions and affiliate groups which is probably how it got so many signatures.

don't get me wrong, many in film (especially french) are pedo-supporting (see also the age of consent petition for cancelling french favs), but it seems like the case---and this is how Natalie Portman characterized it in her apology---that the scumbags promulgated the petition through trusted channels and purposefully obfuscated what Polanski was to be extradited for. "a case of morals" they call it

though American filmmakers who were literally in LA in the 70s don't get to plead any ignorance on the matter. looking at you David Lynch & Martin Scorsese

i don't know what you're implying by this, she's simply an example of someone who signed the petition and recanted it with a statement.

They might be implying she was being manipulated in many ways when she was younger.

I'm not getting the joke, is this in reference to French intellectuals in favour of lowering the age of consent for underage girls and the discourse around that?

Yeah but Jodorowsky still assaulted a woman on the set of El Topo. I love Jodorowsky's films too but the guy himself is a weird abusive pseudo-fascist

It's not true, but it's still a fucked up thing to say.

        spoiler

“These words: ‘I’ve raped my actress,’ was said fifty years ago by El Topo, a bandit dressed in black leather that nobody knew. They were words, not facts, Surrealist publicity in order to enter the world of cinema from a position of obscurity. I do not condone the act of rape, but exploited the shock value of the statement at the time, following years in the Panic Movement and other iterations of harnessing shock to motivate energetic release.”

“I acknowledge that this statement is problematic in that it presents fictional violence against a woman as a tool for exposure, and now, fifty years later, I regret that this is being read as truth. My practice is centered on healing and love. I invite further dialogue in the spirit of progress.”

The words "French" and "auteur" paired together seem to be especially cursed. libertarian-alert

For a "fun" real-life story on that subject, read up on the legal fights between the French photographer Irina Ionesco and her daughter Eva. If you've got a strong stomach.

David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, and as for actors I think a lot of North American actors (including some unexpected actresses) signed it. I don't think everyone will say those are good directors, sure, but they're widely held as great filmmakers.

Just makes it clearer to follow the brace-dark-cowboy rules for life, and Never Trust A Pedophile.

But that is not how the petition is worded

      spoiler

Apprehended like a common terrorist Saturday evening, September 26, as he came to receive a prize for his entire body of work, Roman Polanski now sleeps in prison.

He risks extradition to the United States for an episode that happened years ago and whose principal plaintiff repeatedly and emphatically declares she has put it behind her and abandoned any wish for legal proceedings.

Seventy-six years old, a survivor of Nazism and of Stalinist persecutions in Poland, Roman Polanski risks spending the rest of his life in jail for deeds which would be beyond the statute-of-limitations in Europe.

I don't know how to do it. We need some way to process the fact that up until the 90s it was just normal socially to sexualize teenagers. It is objectively bad. But it is unreasonable to be surprised that people who were educated in the 60ish have terrible ideas about everything. I guess we are just gonna have to wait for then all to die off before we can progress as a culture. We need to update out stereotypes about boomers to include being sex pests.
