thank you! it's such a fun game, right? please talk to me about it. which are your fav stories, what do you like, what do you dislike?

Lmao I'm so glad you asked because I wanna talk about it, too.

First off, I love the music and the vibe. In general, I really like the Dreamcast aesthetic in general (very bright, clean, sunshine, stylish), and I think that was a game that really helped define the look. I really liked the open world wandering. It made it a lot of fun to just vibe in the world. I liked talking to people. Even though I think it's weird that sonic lives in a world with humans lol. The Chao garden is peak vibe, and I'm surprised how much time I spent in it because I'm not usually into minigames like that.

I like Sonic's gameplay, of course, as the game is built around it. I also like tails because they are just the sonic levels but with an added objective. Also really enjoyed E102-Y's (think that was his name) gameplay and story. Blasting the enemies is pretty cathartic.

I didn't like knuckles' gameplay, and I really disliked Big the cat's gameplay.

Tbh, I remember Amy being in the game, but I don't remember how she plays at all

i'm gonna loosely order these points in roughly the same way you brought them up

i love dreamcast-era games. i think with the recent resurgence of ps1-era graphics we're only a few years off from people being nostalgic about the dreamcast and i cannot wait. a lot of those games were just these pristine, ideal worlds. i wanted to live in station square. it really felt like an escape more than any other console for that reason.

i love sonic living with humans because it feels like they're all just sick of him. they've seen him a million times, he always fucks things up when he's there, but he's the only guy who can actually fix problems when they come up

i disliked the chao garden minigames but the chao themselves were fun to take care of. do you remember the VMUs? you could take the little chao into the world with you and it would continue to grow. that was so cool.

tails is my fav because he's basically sonic with the ability to cheat. the only problem with those missions is that they take no time at all because you get to cheat. gamma has the story i cry the most at (i do still cry at sonic adventure). he's such a sweet little guy and he has such a big heart.

knuckles levels are annoying unless you either game the spawn patterns or get incredibly lucky. i think they could easily just make them brawler levels like the werehog missions in sonic unleashed and everyone would have been happier.

big the cat gets a bad reputation because his levels are bad, he's goofy and all he does is bumble around and play in the sewer. i think that's why i like him so much. definitely glad we never had to play as him again though

amy's story is sort of like tails' where she gets a bunch of character development but they forget about all of that in the second one. really not memorable at all except for the cool hammer jump

Yeah, those Dreamcast worlds just seemed really optimistic. Really contrary to the dark and gritty stuff the next generation would bring. But there was so much cool, stylish, experimental shit, too. Even stuff set in the real world like crazy taxy or ready to rumble boxing had such a great feel to them. Then there's that space channel 5, jet set radio Tokyo fashion that was super iconic. Just loved that system, and I was so sad that it didn't succeed.

Yeah, I remember the memory card things. That was a pretty neat gimmick, especially after the popularity of tamogachis. They often opened up new avenues of play for the games.

I don't remember gamma's story, it's been so long but I do remember it being very emotional.

Idk, I feel like people shit on sonic adventure a lot, and I never got it. People seem to like sonic adventure 2, which I think kind of sucks.

But I have to admit when it came out when I was am angsty teenager, I really liked shadow the hedgehog cringe (the character, not his game)

Also, honorable mention to Power Stone. Loved that game! And it really carries that Dreamcast aesthetic.

don't get me started on crazy taxi. i went to a barcade a few months ago and was watching some guy play it on a dreamcast they had set up. i was sitting there, pressure building inside my head because he couldn't do a crazy dash or anything. just a miserable performance from this man

anyway, the point i'm trying to make is that the world would be a better place if the dreamcast succeeded.

you should go back and play both sonic adventures! they're both on PC and can be easily modded to improve the graphics and even restore the dreamcast models in the director's cut edition of the first game. shadow is definitely very edgy but i also really liked his story and really how dark the second game got.

i'll check out power stone soon! honestly i never considered the possibility of dreamcast emulation

Hah, I'm kind of notorious in my friend group for making this argument unprompted.

Have you seen bomb rush cyberfunk? The spiritual successor to jet set radio?

First of all, that was Dr. Robotnik, not Dr. Eggman nerd

Second, that one was funny because he was the ONLY human in a world of furries.

The comics and cartoons also have robotnik in a world of furries
