The play was first performed on Broadway in 1956, and has been revived there three times since, most recently in 2013 with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart
Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart ??? That must have been something!
I hate that you can only find short clips of it on the Youtubes. I just recently read the play and went looking for a movie version and learned aobut Stewart and McKellen's rendition.
One of those recorded Macbeth plays with McKellen and Dench is awesome. I recommend.
Why is that play so influential? I have never seen it, but the moment I see a couple of unhoused men sitting close a tree I immediately know is a reference to that play, and I don't even know how I know about it.
It's trippy and has really well written dialog and does a good job encapsulating a feeling of pointlessness.
I'm surprised the Beckett estate agreed to this. They are extremely picky.
