    I have a theory that the Cuban revolution (and the post WW2 de-explicit-colonization more generally) was instrumental in creating the material conditions that caused scientists in Iowa to torture corn in order to invent high fructose corn syrup.

    So, I guess... bad

        Ah, just that the Cuba’s economy before the revolution was largely exporting sugar cane, presumably at super low prices because puppet government. The revolution happened in 1959, and high fructose corn syrup was invented around 1964.

        Basically, I suspect that before the revolution and the turmoil of anti colonization in the Caribbean more generally, it didn’t make economic sense to go through the ridiculous process of torturing corn cobs to produce syrup.

        I have done essentially zero research though
