i think they're just something to get used to, like no one thinks boston bruins is weird any more, when they're named that because they used to wear brown uniforms
It's still really odd to me that they played an inaugural season without any team names or individual logos lol
i think the reason was just so they could get the first season going, honestly - branding is a pretty complex process. at least that was the reason given
also having every team be called "pwhl _______" is probably pretty good for establishing a brand early on, even if it does look a bit odd

The rugby team is called the Seawolves though and use an orca as the logo though idk
they could always call themselves the supersonics, as it's not in use
