The ridiculous thing to me is why would you want to live like that. Okay cool you have power over some helpless people who fucking hate you. To what end? Great you have someone you force to clean your house for your and cook you a shitty dinner and have really bad sex with sometimes, but you have to be the sole monetary provider and you also have kids running around who don't even know you or care about you. It's a ton of pressure for some power that is honestly meaningless in the larger scale. How is that a rewarding or happy life in any capacity. Maybe I'm just can't see the world through their utterly fucked up lens but it doesn't make any sense to me. I just can't imagine how anyone looks at that and goes "yeah that's the ideal world!" It's much easier to just not be a fucking piece of shit and instead surround yourself with people who actually want to be around you, and it's more rewarding too.

hierarchical society tends to reproduce itself fractally somehow. it encourages people to kick downwards.

Advertising used to be a lot less subliminal. Honestly the implications of half the adds nowadays are pretty bleak but they read the copy over stock footage of a hot couple laughing in a sunlit vineyard. Just don't worry too much about the fact that the adds for a class action lawsuit for being forced to remove asbestos.

The Smiths considered this as a title for one of their albums before going another route.

this one seemed to be a fortified wine with a vitamin mix added (or whatever passed for vitamins back then) but some modern ones have caffeine for that extra spice

I thought it would be something like vermouth or some kind of aromatized wine, like Barolo Chinato or Retsina. Back until relatively recently those kinds of wines were supposed to be good for you because they had herbs and other alcaloids (nothing crazy, only quinine), and drinking wine with every meal was a thing.

So many of them featured domestic violence as a funny bit, too. No wonder grillman wound up that way, paved along by lead.
