Yea, they are both dissociative anesthetics and the experiences have quite a few similarities. If you like Nitrous you will most likely enjoy ketamine, and it’s much easier to get to a fully-dissociated state through ketamine than by doing whippets.
Ketamine therapy is, in my understanding, usually smaller doses of the drug than you would take for a psychedelic experience.

Nah. I mean, it can depend. If you're doing nasal spray treatments, then yes, it's generally a lighter dose. But plenty of clinics give you a full on psychedelic experience.
Oh yeah, I'm in complete agreement there. A brain reset is a good way to phrase it. It's like a clearing away, a decluttering.
Speaking for myself at least, I have no doubt that the experience plays a big role in the lasting antidepressant effects. A good trip (and pretty much all of them are) is intellectually stimulating and emotionally freeing. There's some question about whether other arylcyclohexalamines can have the same antidepressant properties, but of those I've tried, they usually do for me.
not really. nitrous is pretty light and giggly, ketamine can get extremely heavy and excessively thought provoking in large doses. they're both great, but not what i would call similar.
Depending on the dose, Nitrous can also be “extremely heavy,” and just like ketamine, can be used for anesthesia. When you do whippets though, you aren’t sustaining a high enough dose to get the same degree of a dissociative experience.
If you hooked yourself up to a tank of nitrous with a respirator or something, you could have an experience similar to a K hole.
All about the airflow. It’s way more complicated to dose nitrous than ketamine, but to get a fully dissociative, but sub anesthetic dose, you need a tank of nitrous/oxygen mix and like a respirator.
I definitely prefer ketamine, and this thread reminds me I need to get some before the winter Covid isolation hell kicks off in earnest.
for some reason i dont feel like i pass out on nitrous, even when pounding three balloons back to back. i do feel like "oh shit i'm literally fucking dying" which is why I stopped doing whippets. like i'm convinced i just did too much and i'm going to die. and i feel like shit afterwards.
it's interesting to read from some drug wiki that deja vu is uncommon: "Although uncommon and inconsistent, a certain subset of people report strong feelings of deja-vu consistently when under the influence of nitrous oxide."
I get super strong deja vu every single time. Like I'm usually watching some show while doing them, and I'm convinced I vividly remember already having heard every single line of dialog even if it's something i've never watched before. my mind also goes back to the same couple memories over and over again that are hard to recall in any other setting
When you do dissociative like nitrous, you're like physically disconnecting your brain from some of the normal sensory input your body gives you. You're not actually dying, but it can definitely be unsettling. The best way to do any of these dissociatives, IMO, is in a dark room and in a sort of meditative mindset.
Nitrous is also a big rush because of the method of delivery--being catapulted into a very different headspace can bring anxiety as well.
oh that's good to hear. i am sure i will wind up doing nitrous again because im fucking bored and unemployed and i try to limit my more harmful substance intake (alcohol etc). whippets seem pretty safe
Don't do whippets frequently. They're fine now and then, even an all night long bing from time to time. But doing even small amounts every day for a while can turn bad. Nitrous effects the way your body can take in vitamin B12, so you can end up with a severe B12 deficiency. Taking more B12 won't help since your body won't be able to metabolize it.
Not trying to scare monger - for the most part you're right, and they are safe when used in moderation. Just throwing this info out there for the sake of harm reduction.
I've never tried it, but I've always imagined it might be similar to nitrous, is that the case? i wish my insurance would cover ketamine therapy

Interesting. I don't have enough time/expertise to really be able to answer it, but like I do wonder if some of the antidepressant effect is the subjective experience of the drug in addition to the biological processes that the medical research focuses on.
Ketamine always feels like a hard reset of my brain, and I generally feel way more optimistic about problems after a good trip on it.

As someone who's buying some in the next few days, what's a beginner dose look like? Not really looking to K-hole.

Erowid is sadly pretty neglected and still looks like a website from 20 years ago, but it’s still a good starting point.
And like how is a "common" dose? I'm not really looking to sit on the couch and K-hole, more get trippy and dance w friends.

its because you deprived your brain of oxygen for a long time, that's not good to do. it amplifies the effect, but just ain't so good for your brain.

That’s just your ego dying, no worries.
no like i feel like i'm physically dying, like my body is giving up on me

I think objectively the biggest danger with whippets is falling over and hitting your head, so make sure you're lying down, and bon voyage.
i basically always do them in bed watching DBZ so staying safe

thanks - i read that too. i think i average doing them less than once a month.
