Gene Wilder played Wonka perfectly as an eccentric asshole with a heart of gold. This doesn't seem like that.
The original film was a rush job made by Quaker Oats to sell candy bars. Because the film just needed to exist it gave all the creative people involved free reign to do whatever they wanted. Gene Wilder accepted the role on the condition that he would walk out with a cane and do a somersault, demonstrating that Wonka is an unpredictable character who's intentions we never really know. Ironically Quaker fucked up the recipe of the chocolate bars so they just melted before they hit shelves and were never released.
how about it's Wanker and instead of owning the chocolate factory, Willy Wanker is a br*tish cop who goes around asking kids "oi, y'got a loicense for that chocolate, laddie?"
We already have movies of all the good Dahl books, we can stop! PLEASE!
Danny Champion of the World…Henry Sugar… plus all his adult stories
Its the same problem as the Jonny Depp film. The story is Charlie and the Chocolate factory but the 2005 and 2023 movies focus on Wonka instead. He's supposed to be this mysterious whacko who does unexpected things, when you delve into his backstory it makes the character boring.
I've seen this a few times and even the trailer is enough to retcon the entire character of the original. What's the point of an origin story with no emotional throughline to a recognizable character?
