Honestly thought that when this site launched we'd have a bunch of chuds coming in and posting 4chan-tier crap we can just laugh at. Did not expect our first big attack would come from ... supposedly the inside. Crazy shit. Props for doing your best to handle it transparently.

I was banned from the discord and have had no problems posting or interacting with the mods here so far so the clean slate approach is definitely real if you interact in good faith imo.
Just going to edit to say I used exactly the same username, so people definitely would've known it was me.

Yeah there was even a everyone ping on the discord with a post saying moderation would be sketchy and make mistakes and catch comrades in the crossfire, and saying that chapo chat will be better, which is what I've experienced, I oviously can't speak for others.

i got banned from discord because i was stupid, but i have no issues with it. And discord is very hard to keep up with tbh.

          banned

Yeah I got banned from the discord for posting a stupid meme that I realized in retrospect hurt people. Just use an alt-email to re-register and you can easily rejoin the Discord server. I'm enjoying the community again in harmony while being more mindful of others.

The admins and moderators running the discord server are the same ones running this lemmy instance (with a few exceptions). Assuming you were interacting in good faith on discord, what makes you believe you won't encounter similar problems here with moderation?

Multiple downvotes within seconds of commenting. Good faith discussion, for sure.

Because as others have said, the rules were much more strict on discord than here. Also I believe to some extent I deserved my ban at the time. I managed to ping the mods by accident and post violent scenes/retoric twice, which is against the discord TOS but not against the rules on Lemmy. (Except pinging the mods for no reason, that's bad everywhere). Also I've had good and constructive interactions/discussions with the people that gave me warnings/banned me on the discord here in chapo chat, so it's going great so far for me.

Actually responding instead of instinctively downvoting, thanks.

I don't agree that what you described justifies a permanent ban. Many other communities use a punishment tier system, with cooldowns, that permit a reasonable level of moderation action per user.

The rules were strict on discord, sure, but they're relatively strict here as well (compared to the old subreddit). They've said they're planning to loosen the rules over time, but at the moment the same issues with users discussing in good faith being unnecessarily targeted is still relevant.

Apparently you can appeal a discord ban if you want, but I'm not going to bother as I spent wayy to much time on that thing and became really unproductive (in a personal sense, not a job or work or anything like that)

I know that for me and many other people, there was no reason or appeal instructions provided at the time of the ban. I had to run around attempting to contact several mods/admins (many of which ignored DMs or had them disabled) just to understand why I was banned in the first place and how to file an appeal.

The appeal process itself is also something that should be under reconsideration if democratization is a goal for this site. Sending an appeal form into the void with the hopes that one of the moderators that may have taken action against you would be able to impartially review the merit of your appeal is... not an ideal system.

Post of this is the lack of other options for mods. The devs are great, but are still building this place as we go. At the moment the only tool available is to ban. There is no mute feature which would be great.

The rules were strict on discord, sure, but they’re relatively strict here as well (compared to the old subreddit). They’ve said they’re planning to loosen the rules over time, but at the moment the same issues with users discussing in good faith being unnecessarily targeted is still relevant.

This is also my biggest problem. People who’ve been unfairly banned, who haven’t been involved with the brigading stuff, have been seeing some pretty heavy handed action and language from mods that is only forcing polarization.

If you know anyone who wants unbanned and a clean slate, either get them to make a new account, or hit up the mods for an unban.

Downvotes aren't violence, simply a reflection of majority consensus. Theres no karma here, downvoting isn't an insult, if something is downvoted it just means 'more people disagree than agree with this' and that's a thing that's obviously going to happen sometimes.

I'm an old guy now and didn't even know there was a discord. Been existing in a void since the ban and now i have no idea what any of this drama is. It upsets me a lot since i thought i was part of the anarchist fifth column. 😢

I think this has been a learning experience for the mod team and the site as a whole.

Trying to make everyone happy is a wonderful way to make everyone unhappy. The 'wreckers' have stated their demands (sort of? I guess?), and the mod team has looked at them and done what they've done.

That's it. It's over. Having confidence in your beliefs, your politics, and your decisions is key. They'll continue to snipe and poke and claim the leftier than thou mantle, and it will be frustrating and annoying. But, you'll drive yourselves insane if you focus on that. Again, have confidence in yourselves and your decisions and you'll be fine.

As someone who aligns more with MLs than anyone else I can personally say I've never felt threatened by the mods, and do a larger extent, the community. Sure there's some sectarian bullshit from weirdos sometimes but eh. However posting furry porn when asked not to is pretty cringe, no matter your stance on furries (furries are valid fwiw). Also the accusation of the community/mods being anti trans are pretty jarring to me, while not trans myself I've always seen the community as striving for acceptance and validation of all trans comrades, and anything less would personally disappoint me. This is a very confusing time for me, as well as the community as a whole, I'm sure.

Man I’ve been completely ootl on anything going on outside the daily megathreads. I think a lot of people on here just need to fucking limit their screen time. Check the megathread or news sub like max two hours a day and then go read a book or go outside or something. Interact with real people. Internet drama is weird as fuck, it’s not real life it has no bearing on anything. Jesus fucking christ don’t spend your entire life online.

What are the odds the spammers aren’t actually former r/cth users but chuds/stupidpol/libs who really hated us trying to do a 4D chess move (badly though) to turn us against each other? One of the last posts from them includes calling the mods “brocialists”, nobody on r/cth used that word unironically.
