Personally, I could plausibly be Jewish from my appearance and get asked if am by these cultists if I am pretty frequently. I simply say, "No" rather than assuming that they're going to do a pogrom on me. Guess I'm built different rizz

It's kind of worse because the actual fear her mind cooked up for her in the moment was "an angry 'Palestine' rant and thrust pamphlet material at me".

The fantasy that kept bothering her for days afterward was of an intellectual confrontation with 2 children.

This story could really have been punched up for better effect. Like maybe the candles could have looked to be a physically menacing object, even if only for a second. Knife, chib, pepper spray.. really anything other than ideas. She could have misheard something, or misread body language to make the girls seem hostile, again if only for a moment. Or maybe there could be other people nearby who she thought were all part of a big group ganging up on her but in reality they were unrelated random people.

As it is, the story is diminishing of the concept of a hate crime. Mostly demonstrates the author as someone who isn't really able to imagine street violence against an oppressed group, or the way minority stress could cause you to mis-read a situation.

I also wonder what's the perspective of the girls. I bet they could tell how freaked out she was, and why. Hopefully that is a bit of fun for them. Although it could be very demoralizing to see the horror on someone's face when they realize someone has mis-read them to be like yourself.

She doesn't even feel bad for having reacted to these kids so weirdly. Even while showing off her little lesson in empathy about how hard it is to be jewish, she doesn't manage to consider how rudely she treated the 2 jewish children in front of her. Their reactions to her aren't included or of any interest.

The worst thing she could imagine happening to her in that moment was being told off for supporting a genocide, and we're supposed to believe it's her side that are hounded and attacked by ours. I bet she's never even smelled tear gas.

When someone called out of the dark at me, "Are you Jew"?

This is the kind of bullshit that only works in written form, because in real life there's no suspense. You can just instantly go "That is the voice of a little girl" and keep walking.

"So I was walking down this dark alley"
      As you do
"Yeah, as one does. Anyway I was walking down this dark alley at night"
      Best time to do it
      "Without a doubt."
      Without a doubt
"And then at night time, get this, someone yells at me from behind and asks me if I'm a jew!"
Well, hopefully you stopped dead in your tracks, turned around and started to have a conversation with the yeller
      "Anything else would be rude!"
      For sure
"Certainly. So I do that, and turns out it's these two jewish high school girls handing out candles"
      At night?
      "At night"
      In a dark alley
      "In a dark alley"
      Of course
      "Of course!"
Makes perfect sense, best place to do it
      "Without a doubt"
Did they do a hatecrime on you?
"That's the crazy part! They didn't! They didn't even tell me off or anything!"
      Wow
"Yeah, wow... No, but imagine if they had."
      Says a lot about society.
      "Yeah."

What a clown from top to bottom.

Imagine being this terrified of little girls celebrating a holiday.

Also lmao at "actually out of this list of horrible things you've said about me, you were wrong about the one good thing you said, I'm actually a huge bigot I'll have you know"

"I'll have you know I'm a piece of shit. How dare you assume otherwise."

a liberal is someone who fearmongers about creeping fascism, gets accused of not being bigoted enough by an obvious actual fascist, and responds with outrage that anyone would think that they're not a bigot.

tbf if two schoolgirls came up to me and started asking questions I'd be pretty terrified too. Classic horror movie intro, definitely a prelude to some sort of soul devouring cosmic terror.

So if they were handing out candles, they would be holding candles wouldn't they? She even admits to seeing it in their hands but acts like she didn't see it. You confused candles at night for copies of Mein Kampf?

"I went out to eat the other night in London. The waiter told me they had Kosher options and I panicked. I knew I saw a sign on the outside but I wasn't sure. Did I just walk into a death camp by mistake? I realized I was actually just in the restaurant I chose. However, the fact that even a gentile like me had a moment of panic like that says a lot about our society."
