So many people here recommended “it could happen here.” I listened to a little and enjoyed. Then I listened to the recent behind the bastards episode on Nazism and found it packed with lib shit. Imagine trying to explain fascism with little to no class or economic analysis. His co-host was also insufferable and gave off strong Warren fangirl vibes.
His podcast Worst Year Ever has the worst fucking cohosts. Cody is a lib but tolerable. Katey sees politicians as friends and gets overly defensive of the ones she relates to while not actually defending their views, just saying they're a bad ass woman or some other bs.
Guest: yeah, its kinda like when you know when 'repeats analogy that doesn't even remotely fit' yeah it's 'repeats what just robert said in a stupider way then trails off...'
The guest from the Black Panthers two-parter was pretty good, but those are the only episodes I've listened to aside from the Ben Shapiro's Book episodes, so I don't know if he's just uniquely good
I’ve read / am reading a bunch of books on fascism, Hitler, and Weimar Germany, and the takes on that episode just seemed stunningly superficial. (The cohost even blamed workers for Nazism IIRC). The Mass Psychology of Fascism, Blackshirts and Reds, Hitler: The Psychopathic God, and even a popular left-liberal history like Before the Deluge are so much sharper and more detailed.
I don’t know that it’s completely right because I’m not an expert, but it seems sound to me. It’s basically an effort to explain where fascism comes from and how the Nazis seized power in a place with such strong leftwing support as Weimar Germany (which I think had the largest communist party outside of Russia during this time). It also attempts to explain why some workers vote for or support fascists. Reich is sort of like the Freud of Freud: he leans heavily on sexual repression to explain things but does a good job of linking this to economics. I think the book’s wikipedia page actually does a good job of summarizing it. Later on Reich either turned into a kook or discovered more ideas that few of us are prepared to accept.
If you ever get bored, "On the Psychology of Military Incompetence" is one of the weirdest, yet funniest books I've ever read. A strict Freudian (literally, with the anal phase, etc.) tries to psychoanalyze failed generals.
I went back and listened to the first episode of BTB after people recommended it. The first episode is about that terrible tyrant Stalin. I decided to just skip to a random part of the episode. They were discussing a book called something like "Psychology of Tyrants: Hitler, Stalin, and Genghis Khan."
And their entire discussion was about how Stalin supposedly made all the top soviet officials go on benders with him, every single night. Hahaha, all these Russians drunk on vodka all the time. And then they said Stalin was pathologically afraid of being alone. And then they said it was actually a test of loyalty. And then they said "Stalin died miserable, paranoid, and alone. That's what you get for genociding 30 million people." And that's when I decided not to listen to the podcast anymore. If I wanted to hear the lies of Western "historians" like robert conquest I could watch documentaries on Netflix.

You realize that just sounds like a podcast with normal-ish people, right?

The banter and guests are the worst aspect of BTB
Agreed, they never have any good takes and just break up the flow in a janky way
that's said out of them all billy wayne davis from the fake doctor eps seems to have the best rapport with Robert
I actually am surprised Billy Wayne Davis hasn't come back, the ep where they just shared weird stories from traveling America was great.
Some of them are definitely less annoying than others, but like you said, none of them ever have any interesting input.
Robert: says something

That’s true, but podcasts like Revolutionary Left, Why Theory, or Red Library definitely go so much deeper.

I read that as lib-in-denial energy the first time. Still made sense.

Brb going to read this.
