I’ve been working on writing a communist fantasy series based inspired by the Chinese Revolution and a lot of my reading lately has been research for that, which also doubles as theory and history reading haha

The fastest way for Americans to reveal their racism is to talk to them about foreign policy. They'll tout their "support" for Chinese-Americans being targeted for hate crimes due to covid conspiracy nonsense, for example, then turn around and talk about China being full of "brainwashed commies who support authoritarianism 1956 Gorge Oddbell." They don't acknowledge how they're talking about relatives and friends of the same people they claim to support.
And I think they know how this rhetoric contributes to hate crimes, but this gives them a cover to hate immigrants without saying so. They get to pretend to be progressive and more enlightened than open fascists, patting themselves on the back for doing so. Meaning, they support the racist actions and hate crimes. They're just too chickenshit to come out and say it.
I would say a Mass, Elites, and Rebels quote but I think I've kicked the horse dead enough.

I've been reading some of the more popular Le Guin works. She's incredible, dunno why I waited till now. I've also been volunteering. It feels good to help and helps with my mental state (which is bad).
Thank you! I'm definitely having fun. Most of my reading has been piecemeal but there's a bunch of things I'm reading from and I'll get through everything eventually. In the reading list I have: Peasant Life in China by Fei Xiaotong, The Chinese Conquer China by Anna Louise Strong (and I'm probably going to read some of Strong's other works on China too, like The Rise of the Chinese People's Communes and One Fifth of Mankind), Fanshen by William Hinton, Guerrilla Warfare by Guevara, and a whole lot of Mao. My other big reading plan this year is to finally read Capital.
I listened to an audiobook of Red Star Over China last year and that really influenced the direction I decided to take the story. The basic idea of an anticapitalist fantasy seires was already in my head before then but I got really inspired by Snow's descriptions of the Chinese revolution in Yan'an. CGTN documentaries also helped (and my mom has been trying to get me to watch a TV series about the Long March for a while, which I haven't gotten around to yet, lol.)
Le Guin is awesome, I keep starting her books and not finishing them though (which is my worst reading habit, I have a tendency to forget to pick a book back up if I get distracted from it.) Glad you're volunteering too!

the mild annoyance i get from seeing americans treating random chinese people on a social media app as if they were literal aliens from another world supersedes any transient satisfaction from seeing americans get "deprogrammed"

edit: i hope xhs gets banned in the US too. this whole spectacle has been embarrassing for so many reasons that i cant even fit in this post and some people i know already want most americans off the site. this "honeymoon period" isnt gonna last long. liberal chinese appease the feelings of white people and suddenly everyone in this site are talking like "no war but class war! american workers and chinese workers are the same! :)". no consistency or critical thinking at all. just memes and vibes

I've avoided that sort of content like the plague. Its already cringe enough that all of these people call themselves "Tiktok refugees" whilr living in a country that has had a hand in creating situations that lead to people around the world becoming refugees. And that not even getting into the fact that most wouldn't even care about those refugees or bother to look into why they've become refugees.
Yeah I see what you mean. It would mean much more if shit wasn't the usual performative fad that trends for like a couple of weeks.... Then it goes back to the usual bullshit. No bridging between peoples, no mutual understanding. Just the usual caricatures used in place of nuance understanding of people because people are mental midgets. Not to mention the thing seems one sided. The chinese users are the ones trying to be friendly and accomodating but the Western users seem rude and inappropriate exactly as you said and even this will not be enough.
