The specific union she plugged here is also the union involved in the push to unionize the Spyhouse coffee chain, which the owners are resisting. So there's extra subtext here too
God don't even get me started on the fuckery with the Surly union vote
Also its a union thats been working closely with the DSA Labor group and the DSA Restaurant Organizing Project https://twitter.com/restaurantproj
At this point, Spyhouse WILL be unionized, they have something like 90% of the employees on board. It's really just a matter of how much of a dick the owner wants to be- and he's already a pretty big one
That's good to hear. Fuck small business tyrants and all the deification they get in US media.
Wow this is great. Wish AOC would come block to block here in her (my) district saying the same thing to the employees of every single business. Actual praxis helping organize the working class
Seriously this the kind of thing we need a lot more of from elected officials.
It’s so.... not hard to do either. Tbh I’ve worked with the AOC campaign to get her elected and saw so much of the process and I want to do it so maybe one day this will be me. If anywhere can elect a socialist it’s the fucking Bronx and queens
I think I’d get wrecked but maybe some day after some local Gov stuff
Fuck yeah, let us know if you do I'd sign up to volunteer doing phone/textbanking in a heartbeat.
Wish we had more people like her in every state legislature. That's what real political leadership looks like.
That's why I said state legislature specifically need more of this at more local levels. I did some volunteering for some local labor organizers on the ballot for city council, this shit is so important and gets far too little attention.
hopefully someone pounces on this opportunity to highlight alternatives to contract unionism
for real. modern unions have become pretty much just a puzzle piece of capitalism. my mom got her pension cut in half like two years ago and is on the verge of losing her house.
that kind of shits been happening more and more. it's better than not having a union, but until pensions get some kind of federal guarantee union members are still basically hanging on by their teeth.
alternative - solidarity unionism
only tangentially related but this includes an example of an out-of-touch Unite Here local
tl;dr - we don't need more professional organizers, we need more workers organizing their own workplaces, and organizing for a contract is a fool's errand
I'd go so far as to say this makes her like the only actual demsoc in congress.
That sounds a lot like where I work but one of the founding owner's failsons is trying to apply his shitty business econ education to expand and "grow" the business while not lifting a finger even to answer the phones and leaving us critically understaffed refusing to raise pay or hire people while we are dealing with all the extra stress of covid, thus spurring my motivation to organize. If you and all your coworkers are treated fairly and are comfortable it isn't as necessary but if anything like what is happening at my job starts happening for you that's the opportunity to seize on.
Yeah it was pretty sweet for about 5 years or so but as soon as one of the owners decided to retire and let his son take over it's been obvious the direction he is taking us and it's dumb as shit because there's not even much money to be made trying to be the next whole foods or whatever.
incredibly difficult to organize a place where no one's got grievances
