I hate when I get these kind of Machiavellian thoughts but:

What are the odds that the Dems are excited to have Roe V. Wade overturned so they can use the legal status of abortion as a "we don't have to offer anything else" trump card the way the right has? The only reason I can think to not believe this is that it implies they give a shit about winning in the first place...

In general a hard-conservatove originalist Court is good for the Dems because its a go-to excuse for not passing any reform legislation.

They have no shortage of excuses, lol

They had a super majority and passed a bad healthcare bill

They didn't use it to power through legislation across the board that would cement DACA, that was only needed after they lost congress

That's not really true, it was the old court that let them get away with the fact that they couldn't even pass workplace protections for LGBT people or vote to repeal the gay marriage ban between 2008-2010.

Realistically abortion is effectively banned for large portions of the population by extreme restrictions

        ~

So it can be a stupid issue for them to fight over with

        It's depressing though

Being in support of abortion rights is not nearly as polarizing of an issue as those who are against it. Being against abortion is one of the most energizing issues in the entire country. There's very little on the left that is even remotely comparable to how people bomb abortion clinics and seriously harass doctors that perform abortions.

This is a bad take, the Dem strategy over the last decade has been to use court decisions to make up for the fact that they were totally unable to successfully legislate.

The ACB confirmation is a total disaster to that strategy, the party knows they're fucked if they don't pack the court. The sad thing is even though they know they're fucked, they still probably won't actually do it.

Rest assured, the dems have arrows in their quiver, and those arrows will remain in the quiver no matter what happens.

She is not ineffective she is very good at what she does which is enabling Trump while making sure the left is kept under heel.

If anyone tells you to vote for Biden or vote blue no matter who look at them with disgust and ask why they support the key players in ACB's appointment to the court.

Can anyone explain how they could have shut down the government? I'd like to imagine a big Frankenstein-esque switch that they flip but that's, uhh, probably not it, right?

If they didn't pass a spending bill 5 days ago (they could have delayed it to the 30th without shutting anything down at minimum), the Senate would not have been able to hold the confirmation hearings.

          Yep

But they would rather loss the court and say they had no control over all the crazy decisions that will be coming out

          ~

Then they can go pray Stephen Breyer doesn't die, because the senate will sure as fuck reopen to fill his seat too

Here's a handy list of things they could have and didn't use.

they just approved the budget a week ago and normally the government shuts down if that budget isn't approved by a deadline. that doesn't count the senate though so i am not sure it would have mattered. they could have impeached trump or tried something though

        tried something though

The republicans don't exactly have a great track record for respecting or following norms, procedure, decorum, whathaveyou so I personally think there was probably no amount of trickery they could have used to prevent them from bulldozing their way through it...

But for fucks sake....wouldn't that have at least been great political imagery even for liberals? Isn't that like half of what good guy legal dramas are about? Using all obscure tools and technically legal mechanisms at their disposal against the institution pushing for something clearly unjust while the big bad state says "fuck it, we don't care, eat shit!"

At least they'd look like they were good guys.....

I think they tried the comittee quorum thing, which was promptly ignored. Cause of fucking course it was. On that list they did almost nothing.

Instead, they blocked the stimulus at every possible chance, cause fuck all of us for being poor and desperately needing some help.

The stimulus bill the Republicans are offering would protect corporations from being sued if their workers die of covid on the job. I'm not sure if this is worth the scraps they were offering for unemployed workers.

They had 5 months to figure it out and kept saying they wouldn't pass another one. Did you see Pelosi's interview with Wolf Blitzer where she talked about the stimulus? She is willing to fuck all of us over in fear that it would've helped Trump get re-elected. But they will confirm his SCOTUS pick.

Yeah that was a horrible interview on her behalf where she didn't make the problems clear, but this is not a major area of criticism I have with the house dems.

The real complaint should always just be that the initial bill passed didn't go remotely far enough.

They wouldn't have actually been able to block it, they could've delayed it until after the election but that's it.

They also know how the Kavanaugh hearings hurt them electorally in 2018 so they're afraid to do anything that draws attention. Never attribute to ideology what can otherwise be attributed to political hackery.
