We need more variety here, the sub had sooo much more content. I like what's here so far but damn we need more dank memes and less saccharine shit. Is this because we can't post memes?

Those are the most productive posters, poster aristocracy if you will. Some are just better at posting than the rest and deserve more attention. Gommunism debunked!

You mean Top of the day right? There is no "hot" of the day. Hot is just one sort option, all the day/week/month/all are straight sorts by Top.

I think the main problem with Hot right now is that it's not weighting out a top 3 posts of the day like reddit does. Reddit's current algorithm is heavily about setting apart 2-3 posts for the day as "super" posts and then the rest battle to get picked as the posts to displace them.

Reddit has a few different ones. Rising, Top, Hot, and Best.

I think default view was Best.

I only browsed by new, so I'm loving the content style feed of the new/comment section

You've got to remember that forums are like 90% lurkers, the reason the old sub was so nice is that there were 150 000 users with about 10 000 of them terminally online. If you sort by new the amount of posts is actually pretty good (we have more posts than users atm) but the engagement/upvotes is low compared to the sub as we only have 4000 users atm compared to 150 000 on the sub. It will get better with time when more people join, federation with the different Lemmy instances is implemented and the mobile app comes out. What you can do in the meantime is post and upvote the content you would like to see here.

The crucial thing is maintaining momentum. The moment we stop posting, people will stop coming, and we will enter a death spiral.

Up then stable, then up again? Yeah I’d settle for that.

          I’m more worried it’ll look like China’s.

show me the rule saying that you can't post memes and I'll beat the shit out of it, this is a meme-friendly space

I've tried posting my dank memes and it says "score too low" but there's no way of me knowing my score :'(

feels like the rules set by the mods are suffocating this fledgling space.

It's because there's someone spamming the site. You can thank them.

this isn't really a part of the rules though, I'm pretty sure the karma limits right now are just baked into Lemmy and were imported into this with the rest of it. Something we can change later for sure, but it's not like we've specially set it up like this as far as I'm aware.

I don't think anyone's prevented from posting in general, it seems like either a ratelimit or a limit on things like image uploads when having first joined the site, but I'm not sure.

There’s been a karma threshold put in place for posting threads. Iirc it’s 10 for threads and 20 for image threads. It’s so the spammer has to actually comment a bit before getting to posting.

Rate limiting is still in the dev pipeline.

not sure on the specifics but there are some kinds of limits based on how much karma you have and possibly other metrics like account age, but it's not specifically targeting memes

I can't even see my karma or know how much I need to post :'( This feels like there's a posting nomenklatura that none of us party members can get into until the amorphous moderating state power apparatus decides we're worthy

it's the same thing Reddit has for countless subs, and it's even more relevant here during brigades. it's all automatic though, it's easy enough to overcome with a few normal posts spaced out.

reddit has literally millions of users. this site is a week old and trying to get its feet off the ground.

true! but like, we have people spamming alts at the moment still while we're trying to get our feet off the ground. It's a compromise solution but this has been helping out a little so far, we'll be lightening it up once we have things like IP bans.

In the meantime if you guys can get the IP addresses of the attackers you could just put a firewall rule in place as a stopgap.

You need to sub to more communities. Hot for me has one user twice, everyone else is unique. Unless you are talking about turnover in which case it's night time for europe and the east coast so I would expect a lull.
