My understanding is, right now, it’s going into Beatnik’s name.
He’s going to be using it to set up a worker co-op structure. That’ll involve, at the minimum, paying server costs, but ideally it’ll also be enough to pay wages, advertise Chapo, donate to specific funds, expanding the focus of the co-operative, etc.
So as it stands right now it's just going to one person who's intentions we don't can't really know for sure with no way to verify what it will actually be put to?
I mean, he could have set this whole thing up as a grift to run off with a few hundred dollars, but it’s a pretty long game for not much reward.
It’s a fair bit of work to mod the CTH sub, and to then manage the launch this whole Lemmy project.
It’s not like the grift would last forever, either. We’re what, less than two weeks into the launch and we’re already seeing questions like this from the wider community? No way it’d get more than a grand or so before we saw an internal dev team split.
What we know of Beatnik is that he’s a PM in a tech company. That makes me think that a grand or so isn’t really all that important to him, at least not for the amount of effort it’d take here.
Personally, I’m happy to keep donating. I’ll take my cue from the dev team. If they’re comfortable trusting beatnik to follow through, I am too.
Pretty convinced at this point that this is a wrecker, not "from the wider community." Their first few comments were a lot of random quotes about communism that look like they were to farm enough upvotes to make this post.
not to get all "they targeted gamers!" but it's so lame that the spammers are trying to disrupt us with concern trolling, when pointing out instances of concern trolling in news and social media was a frequent topic of discussion on r/cth, not to mention on the official podcast of the sub, citations needed.
Yeah pretty much. Again, if the lack of transparency bothers you, I think it's entirely reasonable to hold off on donating. Personally I'm not donating very much, so it's not a big concern for me.
Well I just don't think it's unreasonable to have to wait for things to settle down to get a full accounting for the money--I know firsthand how challenging a project like this can be.
Well, I think they've got plenty to handle hosting for a little while at this point, so you can probably just hold off on donating until the report comes out.
I mean the site's what, a week or so old? There's a lot going on at the moment, so I don't think they're dragging their feet so much as they're just swamped right now.
Yeah I know the site's new but like i figure they would atleast have like a budget or something they could share for like how much servers cost, or like what proportion they might be giving to the devs that are working so hard on this.
I think you're just concern trolling to be honest. How can I know your intentions are genuine? I want to know before I commit to giving you upvotes you know.
You're not, it's a perfectly valid point, but so are the facts that; the site's run by volunteers, has been up for lest than a week, is dealing with a huge wave of spam, and that you aren't forced to donate
You're right. It wouldn't be smart to trust a random user stating they have a genuine concern without them showing me their discord communities and be transparent. I'm not crazy for thinking that right?
A mod told me that a transparency report was in the works. So far I don't see any reason to doubt they'll publish specifics. <3

When are they putting it out?
Priority #1 is nuking all these spammers
on the bright side, the librapay and patreon all show what's getting contributed so there is some mediocre level of transparency already
But I mean where is the money going? I feel like we should know that before we donate. Not some unspecified time after, maybe.

Tbh, I’ve given away money for worse.

Ok, Google.... give me a couple of quotes about communism and left unity.
It wasn't random quotes it was combat liberalism. and I was trying to combat liberalism.

I'm not sure if I like the framing of a lack of transparency as just a personal issue.
The lack of transparency is a transient state not a permanent one. Again if you don't want to donate, you do not have to.
That'd also be a personal issue.
Well I just don't think it's unreasonable to have to wait for things to settle down to get a full accounting for the money--I know firsthand how challenging a project like this can be.

what? are you telling me to go somewhere else because I asked for transparency?

Yes, you aren't really contributing. People have answered your questions and your motives seem to be to sow doubt rather than to be informed.

That's fair enough. It just kinda rubs me the wrong way.

Even if I was I don't think it's smart to put your money into a black box with no accountability. I'm not crazy for thinking that right?

when it's done. takes longer the more people spam names of neoliberal grifters.
I feel like there should have atleast been something rudimentary available from the start.
give it more than a couple hours, wrecker.
