But I mean where is the money going? I feel like we should know that before we donate. Not some unspecified time after, maybe.

My understanding is, right now, it’s going into Beatnik’s name.

He’s going to be using it to set up a worker co-op structure. That’ll involve, at the minimum, paying server costs, but ideally it’ll also be enough to pay wages, advertise Chapo, donate to specific funds, expanding the focus of the co-operative, etc.

Tbh, I’ve given away money for worse.

So as it stands right now it's just going to one person who's intentions we don't can't really know for sure with no way to verify what it will actually be put to?

I mean, he could have set this whole thing up as a grift to run off with a few hundred dollars, but it’s a pretty long game for not much reward.

It’s a fair bit of work to mod the CTH sub, and to then manage the launch this whole Lemmy project.

It’s not like the grift would last forever, either. We’re what, less than two weeks into the launch and we’re already seeing questions like this from the wider community? No way it’d get more than a grand or so before we saw an internal dev team split.

What we know of Beatnik is that he’s a PM in a tech company. That makes me think that a grand or so isn’t really all that important to him, at least not for the amount of effort it’d take here.

Personally, I’m happy to keep donating. I’ll take my cue from the dev team. If they’re comfortable trusting beatnik to follow through, I am too.

Pretty convinced at this point that this is a wrecker, not "from the wider community." Their first few comments were a lot of random quotes about communism that look like they were to farm enough upvotes to make this post.

not to get all "they targeted gamers!" but it's so lame that the spammers are trying to disrupt us with concern trolling, when pointing out instances of concern trolling in news and social media was a frequent topic of discussion on r/cth, not to mention on the official podcast of the sub, citations needed.

You're concern trolling to try and sow distrust among the community. Your concerns themselves in the original post are valid, but they've been addressed time and time again. If you were a good-faith actor you wouldn't keep pretending the mods are nefariously trying to pocket the librepay money. And don't think I've forgotten about that comment about how mods "astroturf threads."

Yeah pretty much. Again, if the lack of transparency bothers you, I think it's entirely reasonable to hold off on donating. Personally I'm not donating very much, so it's not a big concern for me.

I'm not sure if I like the framing of a lack of transparency as just a personal issue.

The lack of transparency is a transient state not a permanent one. Again if you don't want to donate, you do not have to.

I mean what guarantee is there that it isn't? Couldn't some sort of finacial plan or something have been put forward from the jump?

servers cost a couple hundred bucks a month to rent. they're getting a couple hundred bucks a month. I'm comfortable waiting a few weeks for a more detailed plan over virtually no money at all.

Maybe one could have been, I don't know the logistics behind the server, but at the same time I haven't donated for exactly the reason you are articulating. I trust the mods but not enough to donate without some sort of plan or budget. Other people have felt compelled to donate absent a plan and that is their own personal thing to think through.

Well I just don't think it's unreasonable to have to wait for things to settle down to get a full accounting for the money--I know firsthand how challenging a project like this can be.

Well, I think they've got plenty to handle hosting for a little while at this point, so you can probably just hold off on donating until the report comes out.

I mean the site's what, a week or so old? There's a lot going on at the moment, so I don't think they're dragging their feet so much as they're just swamped right now.

Yeah I know the site's new but like i figure they would atleast have like a budget or something they could share for like how much servers cost, or like what proportion they might be giving to the devs that are working so hard on this.

You're not, it's a perfectly valid point, but so are the facts that; the site's run by volunteers, has been up for lest than a week, is dealing with a huge wave of spam, and that you aren't forced to donate

I agree, everyone replying has agreed, even mods have replied saying there planning on it, there just obviously higher priorities right now, what do you want? for them to set some arbitrary date for it? and if they miss it declare this place a scam not matter if it's serving it's purpose or not?

at this point it's seems you are a wrecker or just willfully obstinate

You're right. It wouldn't be smart to trust a random user stating they have a genuine concern without them showing me their discord communities and be transparent. I'm not crazy for thinking that right?
