These bigoted, ignorant scum will never listen to anything. They are politically illiterate infants with an allergic reaction to reading.

They have ruined a safe space cultivated and cared for, they have turned this place into a new reddit.

I had a dude in my private messages going on about how I was both mutilating myself and other children. Many more people on hexbear have had similar experiences, with these worthless ignorant scum popping in to deliver the political equivalent of a giant shit.

As your friends, comrades, and people you say you defend get slurred at, dehumanized, and harassed please ask yourself:

Is it worth it?

I have the answer, I know you know it as well:

No its not

I used to think otherwise

I was a fool

its not worth a few laughs

even if you dunk all you want, that doesn't take away the knife those people put in our backs.

These bigots, fascists, and NATO liberals are as worthless offline as they are here, why should we give them any attention. They are worth less than the dirt beneath our fingernails. Why should we poison ourselves with their influence? We don't make any room for them offline, why should we not online?

And really

How many essays have your written?

How many sources have you combed through?

How many times have you explained the most basic facts of reality?

How many attempts at good faith?

Only for them to dismiss it in their stupidity. They don't read it, they just crumble and divert back to the programming these little shits trust in more than God.

For every time there is a good faith user, there are a dozen scumbag fascists. And most of the time, the "good faith one" just reverts back to their old shit.

Do you really think losing any member of the hexbear or lemmygrad community, longtime members or not, is worth a few good dunks?

I don't believe a small chance of gaining a new user is worth alienating an entire section of the community. The vast majority of those idiots are lost causes. If they are interested, the can just make an account and ask in good faith.

Is posting a meme to "own the liberals" worth your comrades getting more trauma from bigots harassing them?

No its not.

you've had your laugh, but it should end

Ban them all, SJW, lemm.ee, lemmy, the programmer nazi edglords. Keep Lemmygrad.

Defederate from those communities. We shouldn't sacrifice our own for more clicks. For having to subject ourselves to the opinions of people thoroughly brainwashed? We aren't reddit. We came here to get away from that. I'm sick of this. We are sick of this.

End it now

titus-hardie — "This is just how it always starts, don't it? Every inch you give them, they take miles. It's the same obvious type of bullshit that the people who push these ideas through never think about. Around these parts, we take care of our own — at least, that's the way it ought to be. Last thing we need is more shitstirrers coming in here to mess with the closest thing we've carved out to something decent. Hell, we barely had ourselves sorted out before whoever-on-top opened up their cages on us." He spits. "Bunch of fucking assholes."

meow-hug Corgi loves you all too and wants this site to be happy. Dunking is all well and good, but a lot of the people I love seeing every day on this site are having their lives invalidated by assholes and it hurts me (and not just because I'm a part of the group being targeted).

I haven't seen anything too bad from the startrek one personally. Lemdit and shitjustworks gotta go for sure. Both with unrepentant racist/transphobic mods and no intention to improve.

The current problem with Lemmy is they're filled with Ledditors, people who act more like Redditors than your average Redditors. They are people who used Reddit enough time to need third-party apps, get mad that spez took away their third-party apps, and can't move on to a different social media site but instead choose to use a shitty Reddit clone. After getting their brains melted through repeated exposure to Reddit, their conversation tree is less complex than a RPG NPC. That's why /c/memes@lemmy.ml is so brutally unfunny. It's literally filled with people who unironically upvote "is this just fantasy" or "I did Nazi that coming" for the 3254352nd time. They can't even just take screenshots of tweets like what the actual funny subreddits do.

and it really sucks that that catalyst has to, once again, come at the expense of our trans comrades.

this is where i've ended up as well. i think there's some cool people on lemm.ee that are worth considering (@ice@lemm.ee is an example in this thread) but i don't even want to make that argument if that fucks up the safe space we've made for our trans comrades here.

I really do think the problem is the sorting on posts. It really seems to funnel people into struggle sessions. Before we merge back with Lemmy proper hexbear had its own sorting that was implemented after we had problems with large site spanning arguments. I don't follow what the Lemmy devs are up to but I do hope they think of changing some of the weighting in the post sorting.

I didn't realize just how openly fascist the instance was. we should revote on federating with them. I think we can handle lemm.ee libs but a large percentage of open fascists is a no-go.

I didn't expect sh.itjust.works to be this bad, but they seriously have been the worst instance. I voted against federating because of the racist Xi picture, and turns out that place is full of people who are ready to shapiro-poplar splain why that picture isn't in fact racist.

I've seen a few people change their minds, and more than that say they were already sympathetic and now have accounts here, or post here from other instances. much like the old sub, being a boogeyman is how we grow. But things right now are a getting out of hand. I think defining some of our comms as local-only may help.

To be honest, I've lost count of the number of people I've seen from other instances go "sorry, I'm wrong". Sure, there are plenty of stubborn nerds too, but I can definitively say that those essays and sources and facts do and have changed some peoples' minds.

The memers can make seperate lemmygrad accounts if they want to interact with liberals. I want to go back to intelligent hexbear conversations, and dumb hexbear ones that aren't about the right to existence of minorities.

The only positive is the influx of good users we've gotten over the past month. I think going dark again is a good idea since now we're the Lemmy Boogeyman and people know we exist.

If we keep new accounts application based for a while to keep trolls out, I think we can still turn this into a net positive.

Staying federated with some instances (grad) is good, but federating so aggressively is rough because while we're still the largest instance, we can't handle attacks from 50 fronts.

I'm not going to ever claim to speak for any amount of the userbase but good users found this site just fine before. I'll take the increased activity if the fediverse discussions and arguments and brigades die down

Oh totally, I just meant that since the federation I've seen a massive influx of people who immediately left their instances for here. Mostly trans folk who like our community.

Okay I actually have it all figured out, a solution that will make everyone else, but most importantly, me, happy.

Hexbear dederates from everyone but lemmygrad. A new instance spins up, called Chapo.chat, and federates far and wide. Hexbear federates with Chapo.chat. Hexbear users can come out into the post trenches at will but also cycle back for some lib free r&r. And I get to finally be free of being called a fuckint Hexbear.

How much is it to host one of these bad boys I'll cover it.

    • Galli [comrade/them]
      ·

This was suggested before federation, possibly it was by you.

I think it is a good idea but I also have another suggestion.

User setting to disable private messages from federated instances. Turn off federation until implemented.

The benefit of this approach is mainly that if it is pushed to upstream lemmy then it can be a tool for all marginalized groups on all instances rather than just a solution for hexbear alone.

      • hotcouchguy [he/him]
        ·

Honestly it seems like there should be more granular federation setting available to admins: each instance could have an on/off setting for posting, commenting, DMs, etc., and maybe other things like blocking new users from certain instances, or whatnot.

This would be too slow to solve the immediate problem, but it's something more long term to think about.

Yes and I think it is important to emphasis that we should treat this as a problem that we must address on the fediverse level long term and not just a local site quick fix. This issue is basically a classic example of the tactics reactionaries use to dupe naive libs. Our critics tone police the public posts of hexbear users reportedly not civil enough in our defense of the marginalized all while the criticizing instances are hosting those conducting harassment campaigns in private.

This sort of behavior can so easily continue invisible to those that it does not target and indeed it was invisible to me until this thread. What is great about hexbear is that this thread will be taken seriously as were previous incidences of private harassment (ie: TC69 vs downvotes). On other instances that are run by more reddit brained individuals I do not have the same confidence that such voices will be listened to.

That is why our solution should be tools that can be upstreamed to lemmy, particularly ones that can be applied by individual users. In this way even instances that defederate with us will still be haunted by our specter.

I'm generally pro-federation but I absolutely agree with defederating with SJW. My reason for voting to federate was that I felt that picking up a few comrades is worth dealing with all the libs. But now I can confidently say there are no comrades on SJW. I haven't seen a single cool person on there. Plus even the admins have gone off about "anti-white racism" while defending the racist Xi image. They're all shit.

The other instances have the occasional cool person which imo makes it worthwhile imo and we've been gradually moving towards some sort of understanding, like about what summons the horde. Bringing in a new set of libs sent us right back to square 1 and washed away any progress. Defederating with them would go a long way to improving things while losing absolutely nothing of value. But lemmy.ml and lemm.ee are not nearly as bad imo.

Your point about how liberals refuse to read all of the well cited responses and posts is so true. They don't engage at all, just troll and act smarmy about it while not learning a thing.
