I mean you can say the same about gold or anything else we say has value. It's only worth something due to its scarcity and at least I guess the scarcity of btc is provable and fixed rather than based on how many bits of magma or whatever cooled into gold (I dont know how gold is formed). I'm not in anyway saying it's not dumb btw.

I mean gold is valuable because you can transform it into something useful, we use it in almost every piece of electronics. It is scarce due to its utility

I feel like btc has passed the point now where enough people accept it has value that it always will. Main thing I think with it is that if shit hits the fan and society breaks down to the point that maintaining the blockchain or the internet as a whole becomes unfeasible then it's all instantly worthless. At least gold is a real physical thing you can trade or use to bludgeon someone whose trying to steal your last bottle of drinkable water.

You can buy things with bitcoin too. And anyway, you're not gonna walk into a modern shop and buy a loaf of bread with a roman denarius, but that doesn't make the concept of a denarius silly. Bitcoin is exactly as dumb as any money.

In theory, metal coins are valuable because in order to acquire the metal to make them you've gotta go dig around in the ground for it. Similarly, bitcoin is valuable because you've got to devote time and processing power to create them. US dollars are valuable because ... uh, the US government says so, I guess. I don't really see how bitcoin is unique in being backed by nothing.

Yeah a lot of these reddit nerds need to be bullied at best to make them realize their ideas don't work and are hideous. The only problem is the mods don't allow the free market of ideas to actually take place and heavily shield them from any criticism.

I found this ancap bitcoinguy in the wild who went off on dogs. But not even in a "I don't want pitbulls living in the city" kind of way. It was a Patrick Bateman pathological hatred of anything living because they're incapable of understanding empathy kind of way. I went through their comment history and half of it was a Nazi manifesto against dogs. Bitcoinguys are somethin'.

if someone mentions they hate dogs without them having been bitten as a child or something I just assume they're a sociopath

Especially insisting that a dog can't love you. When I was reading it I couldn't figure out if that meant they had never actually known a dog or if they were incapable of perceiving love. The kind of shit you'd tell your therapist as you're tying a woman to a railroad track.

See, that's where it's interesting enough that I had to save it. He is using Nazi rhetoric, but instead of it being against a minority group it's against dogs in the context of threads about dogs. He hates dogs so much that he became a dog Nazi. I've always considered anime Nazis and gamer Nazis to be the cream of the crop for "lolwut", but he describes dogs as untermenschen. I don't even.

You should see the kind of shit that makes business ownership and sales departments work. If you compare it to laboratories, hospitals, and classrooms, you'd change your mind immediately.

Sales and business is all about arbitrage (this soap can actually be marketed to dog & cat owners too), telling other people to do stuff, and moving things that are created from one person to another. You really contribute nothing original or tangible, but you get some massive mark up on simple products. The latter are the bedrock upon which society is built by producing that which is necessary to function. Counter-intuitively, phrases like innovation, paradigm shifting, and thought leader come from the former and that's where the big money goes to.

In essence, labor is less valuable than advertising which is less valuable than capital ownership. So the idea that capitalism values service to society is laughable because the people who provide the most essential services are the most wretched commodity for people whose contribution is ownership.

Capitalism rewards only service to society, and punishes only those who attempt to graft and parasite on others.

I don't have any words. This might genuinely be the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

As a former bitcoiner who used to get into arguments on that sub a lot (being a lib on a sub full of ancaps will do that), I recommend not going into that cesspit; it's not worth it.
