Don't forget to watch the movie (End of Evangelion). It kind of addressed the main issues that people had with the final episodes.

oh i won't! just finished the season because i have no self control when it comes to the end of animes. the season finale didnt exactly answer all my questions lol. also, is there anything else i should watch? netflix has "Evangelion death (true)" or something and i dont want to look it up in case of spoilers

The End of Evangelion is what you want to watch next, basically the proper ending. Death (True)2 is a clip show recap of the series, but it has some new scenes in it that may shed a bit of extra light on the plot.

I don't know that I would call the movie they were forced to make after everyone hated their original ending the "proper" one. More like the "you fucking assholes want more? are you sure about that?" ending.

When I watched it directly after finishing the anime, it seemed to me that End of Evangelion was meant to show what was literally going on during the final two episodes that are originally told from the perspective of Shinji's subconscious.

So in the sense that people generally watch it after finishing the anime, and it is meant to more clearly tell the ending of the story, I'd call it the proper ending.

I think there was also the issue with the anime ending of Gainax literally running out of both time and money.

i just finished episode 21 now, shit is getting tense. theres a few major plot points that got spoiled but i know so little about the details im excited to find out what happens

Before I watched it, I basically had the entire ending spoiled just by cultural osmosis. But Evangelion has so many moving parts and small details that knowing the big plot points in general doesn't really change the experience all too much.

Damn and now you only have to wait like 6 months for the last Rebuild to come out as opposed to the fucking decade the rest of us have.

I've never watched an episode and I probably never will because I don't think I can be bothered to watch that many hours of anime but I will forever admit that Komm Susser Tod song is a banger.

noooo please don't judge against the last few episodes, End of Evangelion is literally written as a drop-in replacement for the last few episodes and it ties off the show much better than the actual episodes did

    Its so good.

The last two episodes might be some of my favourite pieces of media ever.

One thing I really like about Miyazaki is that he makes his female characters actual human beings instead of the weird caricatures of women that most anime does.

Depictions of youth sexuality are tricky. Shinji is supposed to be the character the audience identifies with and he’d be as horny and confused as anyone else his age. Shinji recognizing himself as a sexual being and seeing others as sexual beings is traumatic and that’s juxtaposed with the more traumatic realization that the fate of the world is in his hands. He’s between the latent and genital stages of psychosexual development. We see a lot of the world through Shinji’s eyes and that means we see how he sees the girls and women in the world. It’s an explicit adoption of an early teen male gaze. This causes a problem because accurately reproducing that gaze requires sexualizing children. I think the show could have depicted Shinji’s psychosexual development without adopting his gaze and been just as good but I can see where the writers were coming from.

Its not something i feel comfortable going "well actually..." to, but the use of sexuality is almost tasteful by anime standards. A couple of moments made me squirm because they went too far but a lot of it had good reason to be there

I think about that shit a lot, you really make a deal with the devil when you watch anime. I pirate all my anime so at least I'm not supporting gross stuff like that

We’re the young girls actually sexualized, though? I remember thinking that as a teenager, and then on rewatch being surprised by how deliberately non-sexy everything except Misato‘s creeping on Shinzo was.

I'm not gonna lie, I watched the whole damn thing but only understood what was going on from my friend who recommended the show to me telling me what different people and groups were doing, or what their motivations were. Like everything seems told through veiled half-references, which is fine if you're going for that effect where nothing fits to make you feel alienated from that world, but then the show seems to act as though it gave you real information. But like obviously the people I've talked to about know what happened, so I think this might be another instance of me being baby brained.

I havent watched the movie yet but yeah its confusing as hell, idk what I figured out for myself vs what i figured out from reverse engineering posts i saw that reference it. But if nobody told me they ran out of budget by the end i wouldve been so confused

I always feel so out of touch when people talk about Evangelion because I hated it so much that I stopped liking anime. And then I got the ol' "you just didn't get it, it's too deep for you" and now I just have fucking contempt for it.
