trying to decide if the Biden team unironically believe this or if it's a gaslighting-style flex

It's a gaslighting style flex. They have teams of people whose entire job is to understand this shit. They know exactly what they're doing, and they think it's funny.

Idk I feel like it's just as likely they think liberals and leftists are the same (or at least on the same team) so they don't know what they're doing.

A lot of them yes, but the smart people in charge clearly know what they're doing. Remember that "playing dumb" is one of the conman's most common tools. If you look at people's actions - which usually have some plausible deniability - it's pretty clear that they play dumb often.

I totally agree. Neither is going to cover everyone, and for most purposes it doesn't matter which someone is they're both harmful in positions of power.

Those teams of people have been educated and indoctrinated deeply under history's most effective propaganda machine so I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't just fucking brain wormed.

The people who think "yeah, Biden's fine" or even "Biden's good, actually" functionally live in a different reality than folks who (1) know who Neera Tanden is and (2) are upset about her nomination. It's entirely possible this is just a Veep-style fuckup, and they can't see beyond the edges of their own bubble.

They don't know what plays well with us, and we have to be constantly on guard against losing touch with what will play well with them (and anyone else outside of terminally-online leftists). If we get stuck in our own bubble, we can't grow, and if the left can't grow it will accomplish nothing.

They know exactly what plays well with us, and they done everything they can to try to distract us, browbeat us, or keep our eyes off the prize (i.e. Medicare for All, Green New Deal, or any other major reforms that threaten Capital)

The comment in the tweet was absolutely said sarcastically in person as a mocking joke.

They know some things that play well with us (like M4A), but I doubt they're tracking the polling on Neera Tanden.

They know that a bunch of little twerps get really mad about Neera, and this is a way to rub it in their faces smugly.

Maybe they’re worse inbred failsons than I thought, but I think they’d be smart enough to know the person who punched Bernies campaign manager wouldn’t be popular on the left.

"Obama world" was much more right wing, pro corporate (i.e. they weren't friendly with activist non profits at all) than "Clinton world", it's just that Clinton world was orders of magnitude more vicious to socialists (and understands the difference between "progressives" and "Sanders world").

Whereas Obama world never actually understood them, and viewed the progressives that they had conflicts with most prominently as being Warren, Jeff Merkley (who is certainly the closest to Bernie world at times), Sherrod Brown, Al Franken, ect.

Everyone is saying it's gaslighting, but no, there are singular members of Obama/Biden world that view Neera Tanden as being from the left flank of the party (because in 2008 that's exactly what she/CAP was, especially compared to DLC/PPI and other affiliated groups like third way and what not).

Edit just to further expand my point:

DLC/PPI essentially acquired the org started by the people who moderate the neoliberal subreddit with the explicit purpose of building community around their cause. Neera Tanden and CAP, no matter how much they suck, are legitimately just not aligned with those folks and are in many ways still social democrats rather than just being outright right wingers. It's the difference between having your preferred presidential candidate being a Warren/Beto/Harris who are really just political hacks that support some expanded social welfare spending vs those who legitimately just want to enact and further right wing economic policy goals.

Most people who became politically awakened as a part of the "sanders world" of politics truly just struggle to understand how far right wing the democratic party actually is given the majority of house members are affiliated with the PPI/DLC side of things rather than with even the CAP side of things. Clyburn and Pelosi are "progressives" because they are for the most part against what the PPI/DLC wants which include things like cuts to social security/medicare/medicaid/ect.
