House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Tuesday said he is directing three House committees to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden in an effort to seek bank records and other documents from the president and his son Hunter Biden.

Any impeachment proceeding is almost sure to pass the House and fail in the Senate.

i understand how impeachment works and i understand the congressional math. i disagree w/ the throwaway christman thesis that the US is on some terminal course of constant impeachments: it will be seen, yet again, that the benefits of impeachments redound to the impeachees party; many republicans understand this, but they are unable to discipline the flailing MAGA wing of the party.

Idk, this feels like a blue slip thing, where dems follow norms from like 40 years ago and republicans just do whatever they like with no opposition

Impeachment needs a simple majority in the House, but a super-majority to convict in the Senate. So, it trivial for the House to vote on articles of impeachment but current partisan divides (and the off-set electoral cycle of the senate) impede any faction from achieving a senatorial super-majority.

So the right wing media will make a big deal out of any findings, which will probably have some corruption uncovered but of the vanilla, boilerplate variety everyone does in DC, the conservative base will get frothy over it, the libs will Nothingburger it, everyone else will see it as more “both parties are corrupt” background noise, impeached in the house, senate acquits.

I don't have anything substantive to add but I just wanted it on the record that I think this is incredibly funny.

I predict this exchange between a reporter and McCarthy...

"What evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors do you have to go forward with impeachment?"

"In two words - Hunter Biden."

The right-wing doesn't need a real reason or even a reason that makes sense. They just need something that can fit on bumper sticker. Plus - there's the added benefit that mocking norms and not even pretending about the way things should work drives libs insane.

michael-laugh hell yes. Every future president will be impeahed, but not for any of their actual crimes. This is the future of the US politics of spectacle. Impeachment is the new vote

tbh impeachment was always a political tool expressly and its actually amazing that it took so long for us to get to the point where we starting using it as such instead of some dreaded and special thing

The election cycle is going to be insufferable if both the candidates have been impeached.

I'm incredibly upset that there haven't been attack-lines from the GOP about drug decriminalization efforts in blue states being a tactic to clear hunter 's name.

Like come on it's right there for the taking.
