In terms of efficacy, availability, or distribution, part of me feels we’re being led by the nose at the behest of the market and 4th quarter earnings. It’s also no surprise they waited to sit on the news until immediately after Biden had clinched the election.
It's clear no one knows what's going on, and it just feels like more hot air. Something just doesn’t sit right.
I also don't see any escape from the reality that the only way we can cope long-term with viruses is implementing mandatory testing and a global public health database.
You really can't fake vaccine results, since millions of people are going to get dosed with them, if the infection rate among that group is higher than 3-5% it will be obvious that they don't work.
What doesn't feel right is the way that people are treating the vaccines as a cure for the pandemic. They're not. They're a cure for individuals. Mass innoculation of around 70-80% of a population is the only way to stop the spread of Covid in that area.
In New York City, vaccinating 70% of the population means tracking down and administering the vaccine to 6 million people, until six out of every eight people in the entire city have been vaccinated. To immunize the tri-state area, 15 million doses need to be administered. There are areas of the country where more than 30% of the population said they wouldn't take a covid vaccine because they won't trust it, which could very well mean that those areas will never become covid resistant.
It's also not clear whether the vaccines provide permanent immunity, so areas that have reached herd immunity may lose it over time. And to be clear, we are not getting rid of the coronavirus. Full stop. The idea of getting vaccines to 70% of the population of the global south is laughable. So even if certain countries achieve herd community, the disease will be on their doorstep if that immunity ever fades.
I think that the most likely scenario, the one that the media is gearing up for, is the situation where herd immunity is reached among certain groups of people, while the disease continues to kill immigrants, POC, prison population, and the minimum wage workers around the country. And some countries will just never be immunized. But once the majority of the 'middle class' or whatever the fuck gets vaccinated, we'll all declare a job well done and stop reporting covid deaths in poor neighborhoods. I mean, even moreso than we do already.

IMO this doesn't work because as soon as a white middle class decides they need an ICU unit all of them will be occupied. Remember that the people who die are also mostly those with tons of pre-existing conditions. These people will need healthcare regardless if they have COVID or not and there wont be enough capacity. So there are key parts to this whole interaction that prevents the scenario you are predicting.
All the overcrowed hospitals will have a material impact regardless if a news reporter allowed inside or not, and that wont change because Joe from management is now immune*(terms and conditions may apply) to COVID either.
The media may try to play a "mission accomplished" card 3-6 months from now, but I don't think it will succeed on its own. The vaccination campaign will have to be somewhat successful.
The entirety of modern politics is just the Bush mission accomplished scenario replaying itself over and over and over until the end of time.
They just announced today that the phizer vaccine is showing 95% efficacy in phase 3. Independent review in a few days.
Sinopharm says 97% with theirs.
I don't think they are lying, I think no one (news/public) is seriously talking about distribution.
talking about distribution
Naw, it'll be fine and easy and good. Capitalism is extremely good at distribution. Just look at food, housing, healthcare, knowledge in the form of education, etc. All perfectly distributed for the betterment of everybody.
is that actually good tho. like if the average vaccine efficacy is 99.99999% then 95% is actually super low. what is the efficacy of like a flu shot
I saw a hotep Twitter account talking antivax shit but honestly it was creepy. It was some sleek looking infographic from some liberal NGO saying "vaccinate BIPOC first" and I can see how they'd be skeptical of being used as guinea pigs considering how black folks have been subjected to medical experiments in the past.
Nah. I don't actually have an account but went down a rabbit hole of hoteps saying wild shit
I heard bubblings about the vaccine in the weeks before the election, and Trump was discussing 'big things coming' with regards to covid so I hesitate to tie it to Biden in any way.
But yeah, I think the stuff about the vaccine coming soon™ is being pushed to suffocate discussions about stimulus checks or debt relief etc. If you convince everyone that things will be fixed tomorrow, you don't have to try today
September 2021 is when we'll find out that in the midst of having innoculated less than half the population we'll need to start over at square one because everyone who already got two doses of vaccine will be due for a booster shot.
I don't blame you for being skeptical, but...
It’s also no surprise they waited to sit on the news until immediately after Biden had clinched the election.
There's other non-American vaccines that have been announced that don't really care about the election.
American perspective on European opinions of US presidential results: How long did it take you guys to give Obummer the Nobel Peace Prize again?
Johnson and Johnson single shot dose will be ready by Feb -- which might become the gold standard.
There will be 6-7 vaccines by Summer 2021.
cope post -- the vaccine will do fine for most people (those who society/the market cares about), and everyone will do their best to forget what happened, and no lessons will be learned.
What they aren't telling us is that even if the government had it's shit together it would be another year before they can effectively distribute it, except the government doesn't have it's shit together. They'll rely on the "public-private partnerships" to slowly vaccinate everyone over the next 18-24 months and maybe by 2023 you won't have to worry about it killing you. Also from what I understand even with the vaccine we can still catch COVID-19 and be sick it will just be more like a mild cold. The capitalists will also do some heinous shit in distributing the vaccine as they do with everything else and it will probably cost thousands of dollars without insurance.
Yeah. Like we definitely need a vaccine but I don't fucking trust these freaks. Especially after all the creepy bullshit about the great reset and collecting biometric data to bring about their techno-feudal dystopia. It makes me feel like a nutjob but these people do not have our best interest in mind. I wish I could get a vaccine in China lol
I can't fathom a future where this techno-feudal state is not the norm, whether China or the US (one world govt, baby). Cautions for overpopulation will be the impetus to push is into a world where human life will deteriorate in value, as we've been seeing.
"The mumps vaccine is the quickest to have ever been developed, according to National Geographic. And that took four years, from collecting viral samples to licensing the drug in 1967. "
😖
I'm admittedly in a few lib facebook groups (mostly local stuff trying to radicalize ignorant libs). I'm seeing posts praising Biden to high heavens for promising to have everyone vaccinated and the schools open within the first 100 days. I can't even......just can't figure out how to tell them that they're being lead by the nose. How can someone even promise that? I mean...just...yeah, I'm tongue-tied right now cuz I was so mind blown at the posts that I think I short circuited...
Facebook needs a "remind me" bot to stir up shit over failed predictions.
I don't know the answer, or whether that's a (rhetorical) question or a statement, and what it implies.
I mean I guess I understood that Pfizer/Moderna were the first, but did other countries/corporations succeed?
UK is putting out theirs too (despite some sketchy stuff in the trials)
The vaccine is likely going to work but their motivation is saving the economy.
