(and that's why they're called the Democrats)

The funny thing is that that's just Merkel's tenure. The CDU has been in power for like 50 of the last 70 years.

Very similar to the Canadian Liberal Party, which has been unironically called "the natural governing party of Canada." They don't really have a consistent set of principles, they conform to whatever shape is required in order to get elected.

If they wanted to be that, they would, but they clearly hate governing or using power. They've shown time and again that they'd rather lose than have to do something that Republicans wouldn't like.

They might seem stupid, and yet we saw the efficiency with which they coalesced to stop Sanders.

They're capable of being competent when they want to be. Their seeming incompetence against Republicans can only be intentional

I don't think it's stupidity keeping them from that goal. Their opponents certainly aren't that clever. I think that they're just nerds who like procedure and norms and process, and they genuinely believe that if they aren't in power, it's because the American people made a conscious and conscientious choice not to elect them.

That's why they are far, far more responsible for America's problems than the Republicans. There will always be shitty people doing shitty things, but the Democrats actively suppress the efforts to do good things on the basis that the system must be allowed to work. Meanwhile, Republicans do actual politics because they understand that the "system" is whatever you can get away with.

I would call it irrationality rather than stupidity, but that’s splitting hairs. Your point is sound. Democrats - both officials and supporters - have West Wing brain, which both loses them elections, and stops them from doing anything useful when they do manage to accidentally trip and end up in power.

What the democrats could be if they were interested in / capable of wielding power

Unironically Merkel is why I see validity in term limits, that woman has sat on the throne of the EU systematically ruining everything and poisoning the minds of every damn European politician for decades, and she only quit now because her brain has stopped working. Fuck you Merkel, we had a war about this, Germans don't get to take over Europe and steer everything towards a homogenised right wing ethnocentric fortress state.

And if she wanted to (not taking internal party drama into account) she could easily win the next one too, no question.

No she bloody well couldn't. I mean sure, she could get the votes, but she is literally not capable of standing for prolonged periods any longer.

Oh they would fucking run her, but she cares enough about her legacy as to not run when she can't possibly act the part. She'll stick around for fucking ever as an elder statesman, and people will still fucking journey to Germany to kowtow to her, to get her endorsement for THEIR OWN LOCAL FUCKING ELECTIONS. I hate Merkel so fucking much.

lol Americans are so cucked that they believe having a person in charge who consistently serves the interests of the people is a bad thing
