I'm more of a lurker here, but I can't seem to wrap my head around the spectrum of responses. At least personally, I'm copping to the ML bent here (same username) and telling people this community still has redeeming value, and I have people maligning me and telling me to log off? Wha-?
Are these people just suffering from lib brain, or am I missing something?
So it's just like /r/cth days where half the people complaining about it have clearly spent no more than four seconds on it and the other half are probably salty because they had a stupid take that got dunked on, then both halves go jerk each other off over how much they totally don't care about r/cth or .chat and how they're totally not mad it's the chapos that are mad
Mmmm, agree/disagree
I think if you come here unprepared, the layers of irony can be overwhelming, particularly about China. I know most of it is tongue-in-cheek, but there's an undercurrent of zealotry here that can be really off-putting. Criticize China and suddenly it's not fun and games anymore, and suddenly everyone is jumping down your neck.
Then the "debate" always materializes into a "you sound super ignorant about China and fall for CIA talking points" versus "you're taking marching orders from unsubstantiated Chinese state media" and no one grows or learns anything.

this, lol. The response to the post that was like "why is there less unions/labor protection in China" got actual serious responses compared to the "Why is there still billionaires in china, tankies owned" posts

I feel the same way! It’s an anonymous message board after all. Getting occasionally downvoted to hell makes me feel alive :stalin-shining:
But people do actually learn things; that's how radicalization happens, and most of us (and apparently reddit, too) agree that both the old CTH and here can radicalize people. It just doesn't happen all at once, and it doesn't happen without disagreement, and even when you move to the left you still don't agree 100% on everything with other leftists.
Plus, at least so far, even contentious struggle sessions on here rarely turn into bitter. long-term pissing matches with other users. That seems appropriate given the scope of what we all agree on vs. where our opinions differ.
