I'm more of a lurker here, but I can't seem to wrap my head around the spectrum of responses. At least personally, I'm copping to the ML bent here (same username) and telling people this community still has redeeming value, and I have people maligning me and telling me to log off? Wha-?

Are these people just suffering from lib brain, or am I missing something?

The redditor who started that is a r/neoliberal poster with a 17 days old account. Who likes to bitch about the FaR LeFt slightly progressive dems .

They are all falling for an op.

the chapo subreddit was okay when it was still <50k subscribers and not just this giant catchall for all leftposting. I remember a thread where half the users fessed up to not listening to the podcast at all. It was truly garbage.

Imagine thinking this is a bad thing

I heard from someone else in the discord last night that V**sh was live, reading a chapo.chat thread (that was shitting all over him) on stream, so maybe this is related to that?

(edit: not sure if true but who even cares lol)

I was expecting this site to be absolutely swarming with butthurt radlibs by now, though I haven't seen too much shitlibbery standing out. Maybe they decided to raid one of the last remaining vestiges of cth on reddit instead of registering to post here

Lib redditors are always saying this shit.

They hopped onto /r/cth and then say "they are the most insane cultish people I have ever laid eyes upon" like what the fuck sub were you looking at?

So it's just like /r/cth days where half the people complaining about it have clearly spent no more than four seconds on it and the other half are probably salty because they had a stupid take that got dunked on, then both halves go jerk each other off over how much they totally don't care about r/cth or .chat and how they're totally not mad it's the chapos that are mad

      Mmmm, agree/disagree

I think if you come here unprepared, the layers of irony can be overwhelming, particularly about China. I know most of it is tongue-in-cheek, but there's an undercurrent of zealotry here that can be really off-putting. Criticize China and suddenly it's not fun and games anymore, and suddenly everyone is jumping down your neck.

Then the "debate" always materializes into a "you sound super ignorant about China and fall for CIA talking points" versus "you're taking marching orders from unsubstantiated Chinese state media" and no one grows or learns anything.

no one grows or learns anything.

But people do actually learn things; that's how radicalization happens, and most of us (and apparently reddit, too) agree that both the old CTH and here can radicalize people. It just doesn't happen all at once, and it doesn't happen without disagreement, and even when you move to the left you still don't agree 100% on everything with other leftists.

Plus, at least so far, even contentious struggle sessions on here rarely turn into bitter. long-term pissing matches with other users. That seems appropriate given the scope of what we all agree on vs. where our opinions differ.

They want healthcare and to smoke weed and they think it's funny when Chapo chides woke people. That's it. The little bit of leftist content in chapo goes over their heads. Also it's people who only know about other things through posting. They saw someone here make a president xi joke and since they get all their knowledge of China and leftism from memes on reddit, they get weirded out. A lot of people are pathologically incurious and will always navigate the world through posts they read.

any leftist space with mostly Americans will have a larger than average population of people who are mentally ill/trans/queer/etc folk because the only surefire way of becoming a leftist in the USA is to feel a larger than average degree of alienation or some kind of debilitating poverty to the point where you have given up on attempting to integrate your personal ideology into the general consensus because your own personal experiences will not be congruent with "normal" business as usual American politics

also how cool is it that liberals see us as rich white dudebros and right wingers see us as depressed trans pussies

This has always been the biggest mindfuck in my personal life. Maybe it's just because I probably have at least one Cluster A personality disorder, but I've never been able to understand people who can just take things at face-value without questioning them or doing their own research to the extent that they weren't beat down or exhausted or something. I understand being exchausted and not haivng the energy to think about things, but how the fuck are you gonna be rich and comfortable and not be asking questions all the time?

Isn't the entire point of getting rich the fact that you can ask questions and call out demonic cunts without worrying about starving or being banished to rot in a gutter?

Like I said, my brain simply can't conceive of the idea of being uncurious. Evil, devious, uncaring, sure. But not wanting to know the real story? Inconceivable. Even if you're a rich asshole who doesn't care if anyone on Earth lives or dies, don't you care to know what going on to spite your enemies? God damn, Capitalists suck! They aren't even trying!

There's anti-anarchist opinions but no opinion about Chapo. Some users of r/genzedong might have a problem though but again almost no opinion. I personally like this site because it's generally anti-imperialist.

I see this a lot with opinions about the podcast as well. I see discussions on twitter all the time about the apparently constant use of racial slurs on the show, which has always confounded me. Is it because they occasionally make Italian stereotype jokes? Is it because they listened to one of the Call of Cthulhu episodes and thought the characters were the hosts?

A friend of mine said the words to me "I'd listen to chapo more if they would just stop saying the n-word"

like what are you even listening to

Reminds me of Amber's hatred of the subreddit after her only exposure to it were the most ridiculous threads screenshotted and sent to her by her twitter followers.

Seems like a similar thing here where these people have only seen a couple of screenshots and are basing their entire impression of the site on it.

Sounds like r/cth to me. Half the people on r/cth were glad it got banned and said the same stuff these people are saying so I wouldn't take it seriously.
Plus the china stuff and saying one is a revolutionary when they can't order a pizza over the phone is pretty cringe.
The star trek west wing post was also cringe.
