But I was watching the show from the beginning and was there for the seasons where it went off the rails and generally stopped watching around season 9-10, and the random episodes I caught after that were unmemorable to say the least.

Yeah, The Simpsons of 10ish years ago is mind blowingly unwatchable, god knows what it's like nowadays.
