They're already trying to lump Antifa™ in with the riot. They've been wanting to do something solid to crackdown on protestors since the BLM protests, but it would be terrible optics. This gives them the out.

Yeah. As we know, leftists are usually opposed to right wing fascists getting the shit kicked out of them.
He's right and others are calling this out as well. Covid was used as excuse to increase all this spending for using defense companies and shit to track the virus and enforce social restrictions. Since the spring tons of money has gone into constructing the perfect surveillance state. They use everything as an excuse to bolster security and defense.
But the problem is that people are confusing laughing at Trump with cheering on the police state. Unless they're using left in the most general since which includes libs. Of course libs are fine with overreach. They've been asking for the FBI to take Trump out of office since 2016. But I don't consider them 'the left'. It's okay to laugh at Trump. Some people are so gung-ho to jump into criticism mode that they forget to laugh.
