Apparently people are supposed to have robust memories of their childhood? I have disconnected reminiscences that don't really have any continuity, just like walking on wood and looking at ants, or eating hot wings one night, and a vague sense of where I might have been in the world and very broad imprecise memories of some classmates (lucky if it's a name and a face shape before the age of 12).
Is this not normal? I thought memory just was shoddy for everyone until puberty because it was developing
memory loss is common with trauma so could be that. otherwise, idk

Yeah I have basically no memories of my life prior to age 18, when I moved out of my parents' house. It kind of feels like I was born when I started college, and all that other stuff is just a story that happened to someone else.
mine's not quite as bad, but yeah that's how i see those memories too. They don't feel like it was me in them, more like watching a movie where i was a passive participant.
It's a known thing some people have and its not that unusual.
Other people have continuous memories from age 18 months. Most including me from about 3 or a little before, but i suspect a good deal of that is narrative confabulation.
Yeahhhh I don't think it's super out of the ordinary from people I know, but my ADHD or depressed pals definitely have way worse memories, which is as much based on encoding I gather rather than the kinds of memories.
A lot of people on the other hand (not me I shouldn't think) have shoddy memory because of trauma, and if you're unaware of an underlying memory issue and identify with it might be worth exploring.
I would say my memory is maybe a bit better than yours, but I have like 3-5 scenes from before I was 7, and then until I was in 8th grade there are 2-4 things I remember from each year. For the most part it's either big things (day dad/nan/gramps passed)or meaningless drival (being itchy on the bus one day and I looked at a house we passed). A lot of them are more like general sense of a place and a feeling more than remembering the way I could remember moving into college or going to the beach last year.

Mines pretty vague till about 12 as well lol
I remember a couple pretty eventful things, but it's all broadstrokes

How old are you? I'm mid 20s and just starting to forget people I went to school with. Not like friends or people I talked to occasionally, but in my class of ~140 I probably didn't talk to about 30% of them more than half a dozen times through middle /high school and I'm forgetting like both their names, but also some of them look different enough now I don't remember their faces.

Yikes.
When are people supposed to start having memories such that like they have a reasonable chance of telling you what happened reliably in a full year and then keep that going in a chain until adulthood?
When I try to think back to being a kid under say ten, I just can't. There's plenty of stories I've been told, I can imagine playing in places I also saw when I was older like my grandparents house, but I can't ever seem to put my finger on an actual memory.
I have no idea if that's normal, but I'm guessing not. So I don't know if it helps but it sounds like you have more than some people.

I am the same way. I remember little here and there stuff but I can’t really remember much of what I was doing at any given age before 13. Most of my pre-puberty memories I can’t even tell if they’re real or my mind made them up. Sometimes I ask family if X or Y happened or happened as I remember it. Sometimes they say yes sometimes they say no, which confuses me more because then I wonder if maybe they just don’t remember it
I am the same way
I've always had this struggle with my mother, who seems to remember everything that happened in her life pretty vividly and can recall it while I only have vague impressions, scenes imprinted in my memory with a vague sense of time associated with it. Like some of my first memories was watching Sonic on the TV, but when that was exactly I haven't a clue.
Only things in the last 10 years are like, memories I can kinda timestamp recall but even then it's kinda vague. It always struck me as weird because are we supposed to seriously remember every day of our lives? That can be a fuck ton of time and brain memory bandwidth to maintain, I feel like I'd go nuts if I could vividly recall so much time.
