I agree, they were smarter than Parler in self-hosting. It's just annoying to see them take credit for things that were already developed by others, and then hide the source for most of it.
Us FOSS extremist don't take kindly to people using open source without source attribution.

I was thinking about this too. It's a good idea to build out an entire eco-system that doesn't rely on capitalist interests. It actually something I think we really should be expanding to imho. It's like building dual power.

I just had such a beautiful thought enter my mind:
Imagine being a boomer, you don't know much about technology, but all your groups on "the facebooks" and youtube stations start going off the air because you're a racist piece of shit. You find a video explaining to you alternatives to those websites so you double-click the video to watch it. Within 5 minutes you find yourself completely disgusted and on the verge of puking because for some reason all they are talking about is open sores, and how great it is that all these alternatives are covered in open sores.

I wouldn't trust them with encryption, payment information, or put any of their trashware on my devices. In the wake of a... complicated both-sidesy hack on Parler, this has got to sound to that black hat like an invitation to see whether Gab minded (and continue to mind) their Ps and Qs when they designed all this infrastructure.
Tbf even if you didn't build it from the ground up, operating and maintaining all of that sounds like a pain
