Propaganda is when China does it. Surely the US is not engaged in systemic propaganda.
I will say, it is a good idea to check what is on non-leftist spaces. You should know where other people's heads are at if you ever want to bring them to the left.
A good position to start advocating for is being against war with China. Get in with it before your friends/family are completely poisoned otherwise.
I check /r/politics a few times a week (and /r/conservative once or twice a month - they're a lot more predictable) just to get a basic idea of what they're focused on and the type of news they're reading. It can be a little painful, but I've noticed that there's a lot more socialist posting going on lately - in some cases people are even justifying their arguments with theory. It's definitely still lib HQ, but it seems like we've got the momentum.
But yeah, turn on NPR once in a while during your commute - it won't kill you, it will give you something to talk about with your lib coworkers and it will create openings to discuss socialist solutions.
You'll never ever be able to change your parents mind most likely and it's pointless to try. Mao would call me liberal and rightfully so, but for the most part parents will never ever accept that their kids may have a point on them even if they're willing to admit that you're generally smarter and more well read/informed.
They also will pick really weird hills to die on. I convinced my dad (born in 61) that Stalin wasn't that bad but he held strong that McDonald's coffee lady deserved it to the point my mom cried over the argument. I'm 29 and that happened a few months ago. There's a lot of my life I just have to keep away cause most likely they are incapable nor unwilling to do anything, it'd be nice to have them on your side politically but it's not realistic. I can't even get them to vote NDP
They always agree about how it should be, but that's "just not how the world works." Capitalist realism is the worst of all brain worms.
"admit that we did a good job and made someone fucking smart? NEVER!"
I don't know your parents, but my general sense is you can't argue with parents, especially if you still live with them. Not cuz you shouldn't; it just doesn't work. Capitalist realism already has people convinced that questioning the existing order is evidence of an immature mind, and that serious people know that this really is the best of all possible worlds. You're not going to overcome that ideological programming in the people who changed your diaper when you were a little poopy baby.
yeah exactly. my parents are libs so if you can demonstrate you know your stuff but still be nice to them it's not too hard to get them to soften on some stuff. they can be pretty vulnerable to china stuff though if i don't help beat that back
yeah but who actually gives a shit about china? they haven't been on the right side for decades. you could maybe argue they're a necessary counterweight to the american empire. that's the one virtue i can ascribe to that government.
i don't necessarily want them to be on china's side or whatever; i want them to be safe from takes like china intentionally starting covid
well obviously the trumpers are gonna believe the most outlandish nonsense anyone's ever bothered to write.
they never believed that but my mom watched a documentary that had her asking some of the wrong questions
Use Parenti as an example and prove communism using the libbest sources possible. For example, "gommunism no fud" is disproven by the CIA.
the way i talk to my parents is i try to find one based thing they did (my mom was a leader in a union in communist czechoslovakia) and really play it up and say how proud i am of that and then i sneak in tidbits of ideology to get them to agree with me
the biggest failure of communism in czechia is how they produced my lib of a mother jesus christ
I'll never get to use that card, I am 100% certain my parents have never done anything even remotely approaching the vicinity of based. Everyone here either has sort of cool parents or the exact opposite
It's clear that many of the Eastern Block countries completely failed in teaching their populace theory. My dad was a member of the communist party and though not high level he was at least politically aware. These days he's terminally online, reactionary as shit (hurr dürr genders, Soros etc) and a Putin fan boy. Materialist analysis is just not a thing for him.
was this in reference to ChaCha lmao? we should add it to the splash text feed
I'm so jealous of the people complaining about their lib parents on here. I'd be so happy if my parents were libs instead of reactionaries who still think Trump won the election.
