someone i work with stopped their video on zoom, then came back wearing a biden/kamala sweatshirt as someone else was wearing a usa jersey and they wanted to join in. they then spoke about how they wept watching the inauguration.

on the same call, someone else talked about how they were bummed to have missed kamala's speech as they were at the store buying charcuterie and champagne.

someone else on the call spoke of their relief america can finally be "respected internationally again".

someone else i work with simply posted "MADAM VICE PRESIDENT" on slack.

these are all people in their 20s and 30s that think of themselves as having "left wing" politics.

americans are cut off from any traditional social fabric or ritual that would allow them to feel emotionally bonded with others so they're forced to overperform their reaction to the spectacle in completely inappropriate and uninvited circumstances.

Reminder that Gorman is the woman who tried to cancel Billy Collins for racism last year because he rejected her poem from the young poets yearbook he edits and it turned out he just doesn't rate her as a poet and didn't even know she was black.

Lmao if that's true (can't find it) that's pretty funny.

I liked the little tidbit about how she was wearing jewelry gifted to her by Oprah Winfrey -- would be pretty hard-pressed to think of a single more damaging individual to art in the past 30 years.

I'm 90% sure it was her, she wrote a medium post about it and Collins - an 80 year old man had to respond and he sent a letter in the post to a newspaper to do so because he didn't know what medium was. I read his response in the New Yorker.

I'll double check now but I thought I was pretty safe because how many black poets are called Gorman (and that was part of why he hadn't even realised that's why the name stuck in my head). If I'm wrong I'll edit my comment. This is why I should check before I comment and not just assume and end up looking like a dick.

Never heard of this -- what's the deal?

The young poets yearbook is a national thing, it's not affiliated with a school. If you search her name on medium you can still find her call out post.

Amanda Gorman was AMAZING. Those fluid hand gestures. 😍 I've watched it twice, once live, once with Maliya during her school break. Unfortunately, school started during the first part of the inauguration. And Reese was in a meeting during the poetry recital, so I'll watch a third time with him.

The poem girl went to a private school that cost like 40k a year or at least that's what they were saying on Reddit and I believe everything I read unsourced on the internet. *From her school's website. School's name is New Roads:

    Tuition: 2020-2021 tuitions are: Grades K-5: $34,110 Grades 6-12: $42,180 International Program: $52,945 Spectrum Program: $55,640

    • I am unsure if this is per year or for the block of years. Regardless it is a huge sum of money. Then she went right into Harvard. Her reciting that poem instead of some poor kid that actually had to earn it is the most Democratic Party thing ever.

🎶 Oh I cried when Kamala was sworn in

The glass ceiling shattered at last

And I cried when chuds stormed the capitol

I flew my flag at half mast

But BLM need to stop rioting

Or they'll get what is coming, and fast

So love me love me love me, I'm a liberal. 🎶

    Kamala's talking

    The glass audibly shatters

Who's that walking up to the podium?

    It's Stone Cold Steve Austin
