I don't have a book recommendation but I just looked through old episodes of Mike Duncan's podcast "The History of Rome" and I think I found the episode where he starts discussing that period. According to Wikipedia the assassination of Emperor Severus Alexander is what kicked off the crisis so this seems like a good place to dive in:
