    There is actually a counter example to this. Venezuela. Hugo Chávez originally believed what you are saying. From his wikipedia article:

    ... Chávez was a supporter of taking military action, believing that the "oligarchy" would never allow him and his supporters to win an election ...

    So he tried a revolution instead... and it failed. He and his comrades got thrown in prison, but were luckily released in an attempt to ease tensions. Then he ran for president and managed to win. He wasn't "soft" like Bernie or Corbyn. He used the power of Venezuela's political system to further cement his socialist government. Chávez died, but the government lives on and is still socialist, much to the US's chagrin.

    Of course, "western" and Latin American countries are very different. Something exactly like this probably couldn't happen in the US or the UK. Still, this story is worth remembering.
