Deer, at least. Need a lot more doe tags though bc CWD and overpopulation. Also deer meat being donated to food banks is a thing, I know people who do, that's good. Also good bc it doesn't support factory farming.

Managing deer populations is better handled by wolves/predators in general along side indigenous hunters, populations are fucked because of how much we fucked over the natural management system and how badly we fucked the people who were here already managing herds for thousands of years. Any tag system is just gonna lead to trophies rather than feeding people or responsibly managing the herd - and really, if you want the trophy just take a picture after stalking or sitting up in a blind. If a big org or agency declares the herd needs to be thinned out or managed, that's fine I guess but there is clinical evidence that you can get CJD from eating tainted venison so its not necessarily the healthiest thing to expose people to.

I'd never shit talk someone who's just trying to get by or feed their family and their best option for protein is to hunt, but that's so few people and besides that chicken and adding garden veggies (peas, legumes, beans) is probably cheaper between a gun, license, tag, time hunting and cleaning and butchering, etc.

where it is not politically feasible to reintroduce them (e.g. UK)

We reintroduced them in Poland and Germany with great success.

The UK is looking at reintroducing some predators, specifically for reducing deer populations IIRC

Yeah, I wasnt considering other places than the US. Obviously whatever works in the UK, I still stand by wolves would be a better management tactic but I guess people got to do what the got to do.

Eh, many types meat can give you CJD, it's just extremely rare and it's probably similarly rare of venison.

Incorrect; CWD and CJD are both prion disorders, you're only going to get CJD from prion infected animals, i.e. Mad Cow disease. You think COVID is bad, but a prion based pandemic could quite literally be an extinction level event.

Yes, and I am saying you can get it from many types of meat. Prions aren't very transmissible, you can't conceivably have a real prion pandemic, it has never happened and you definitely won't get it from venison.

EDIT: By "get it" I mean get a pandemic. I may be possible for a human to get a prion disease from venison, but it seems extremely unlikely so far, and not a lot of people eat venison.

You're right about tags and trophies, but does do need to be hunted more, tags would definitely be detrimental to that
