I like anime when it isn't creepy moe shit about school girls. It's hard to find anime that isn't reactionary shit, but when you do its amazing.
Manga and anime written by women (Like Fullmetal Alchemist) tend to be pretty good, for example.
Like 90% of the animes that reference some DnD-adjacent thing in the title are about "clever" subversion of the genre through copious amounts of sexual violence.

Nah, I'll step in for @mwsduelle . Acting like one form of media is more "real" or something is the hot take here. They're just both different ways of delivering qualia, storytelling can be done in either media well or poorly.
And in both a cynic could easily say most works produced are either somewhat vapid, or for niche audiences. Books just have the distinction of lots of them were made for audiences that are dead now.

I'm just gonna say it: If you hate anime, but not western animation, I feel like there's some race stuff goin' on there.
Neither are monolithic and both are equally diverse in content: cmv.
I think people who "hate anime" usually just hate certain tropes they've associated with it. I like anime a lot personally, but I can see how the abundance of pedo and pedo-adjacent shit is a major turnoff (Evangelion gets posted a lot on here, but it needs be remarked that the two "waifus" in that show are fourteen). Then there are the racist jokes, the transphobic jokes, the homophobic jokes, the misogynist jokes...
That doesn't mean that there aren't a whole lot of shows that steer clear of those tropes, but once that association is made they're never going to break it on their own.
I don't think the kind of person that makes a show of hating anime is going to defend western cartoons.
I just don't like the art style. Western cartoons are getting increasingly worse though.

Yeah it is often reactionary. Have you looked at Japan? And it often has shitty themes, yep clearly most of it is made to appeal to Japanese middle aged salarymen/NEET virgins because they spent their entire teenage years cramming for some shitty exam and then spent their adult years working 16h a day in an office full of men.
So yeah there are some very shitty anime and this causes some people to disregard the whole genre and so when there are some very great anime they wont know or care about it. Ah yes and when they say "anime" they tend to forget Miyazaki shit is the same "anime" as [generic teenage incest romcom] so that is always fun to see the double standard.
But anime is sort of taboo because it is too niche, so it is easy to hate and not feel like you are missing anything. Some people are just hypocrites too given that by if they used the same metrics to judge other media they would also have to give up like 80% of all movies and TV not just because of the reactionary/lib dominated world but because Hollywood is literally pedophile/rapist paradise. And the music industry as well unless you fancy financing exploitative record labels that fuck over artists.
It is a hell world, if you hate things to the point of not considering it beyond the surface level and appearances then you'll just alienate yourself, become miserable, never consume or do anything because everything is never more than a few steps away from a connection to straight fascism or liberalism(or both).
As for anime, anyone that cares enough to watch the good stuff wont have problems finding it just pick any Kyoto stuff or any of the recent popular movies etc...
Also China is making their own original anime too so that is a struggle session coming to you soon.

There are anime...animes? Anyway, I like some of them. But broadly speaking I still dislike anime and enjoy shitting on it, because there are many tropes (outside of obvious stuff like pedo shit) common to anime that I just don't enjoy, and there are seemingly so damn many that take place in high-school.
It's common for me to hear an anime premise and be really on-board, and then I hear it focuses on high-schoolers and I check out and stop caring. The way the genre/ medium focuses so much on high school and youth straight-up depresses me more and more as I get older.
And for some reason, whenever I see people say similar shit, the shows people reccommend swing hard in the opposite direction and they're really fucking weirdly heavy and depressing. like the two main modes of anime are dumb and horny teenagers (with whatever gimmick or twist) or excessively sad and weird shit.
If I see another new anime come out where the plot is "Asocial bullied dork is transported to a magical realm where all the hot babes wanna suck on his new chad dick" I'll . . . do somethin'
I'm old as fuck and I think hating anime is a classic "too online" take. As with any medium, there's lots of shit, but some of it is pretty good.
