I’ve never actually heard or seen someone honor such a request online or IRL, and it would sound ridiculously stilted if they did. Where is Rumpelstiltskin's coat? Rumpelstiltskin must have left it at the bar. Will someone please text Rumpelstiltskin and let Rumpelstiltskin know?
a lot of people are undecided on pronouns or dont want to be identified as one gender or the other for security reasons. i figure some agender people might be interested in the idea too.
some trans people also dont like the idea of being pressured to state pronouns.
the main goal of having mandatory pronouns listed to each name on hexbear is so that trans people arent singled out as the only people with listed pronouns, making it harder for transphobes to target individual people. in the larger fediverse it also makes it obvious that we're all trans accepting commies which definitely makes people angry, and it is very funny.
When the revolution comes, the state will enforce pronoun use and it will be beautiful.
The more pronouns you have, the cooler you are. Sorry, I don't make the rules
It's the default so I think it's way overrepresented here
used to be you had to pick bu i think this is the case now yeah
Should go back to that. Leave none as an option, but don't leave a default.
It pissed off people with brainworms and made wreckers so much more obvious before federation happened. GOOD feature
coupled with it being the default as mentioned, i think some people just adopt it as another layer of opsec
Best not to worry so much about it, I think.
Out of all the posts I've made on this site, I don't think I've ever used a pronoun to reference another user. I haven't noticed anyone use a pronoun to refer to me. It will probably just never come up, especially in real life.
But yeah, if the rare situation arises, just use the name.
the only recurring reason to use a pronoun for someone on a place like this is usually to talk about the original poster, who is already lovingly abbreviated "OP", shorter than most pronouns
I think it was included to assuage concerns of forcing pronouns on users. It's easy enough to use someone's name if you don't know different. Pronouns also don't tend to come up in first person conversation, it's only when referring to someone else that it causes grammatical issues
No, it’s the default when you sign up and now you have to go back into your profile settings to change it.
IMO pronoun selection should have been included in the sign up page (and if I remember correctly, this was the case at some point before the federation?).
ive gone back and forth between he/him, and none/use name and any/any because i dont care how people refer to me. I guess that might be problematic but im not real smart and im nothing but fucking problems. I left it at he/him because it is important to others, and im trying to be mindful of others.
Yeah I don’t especially care which pronouns people use to refer to me, either. I get misgendered over the phone and usually don’t bother correcting them.
Why do people refer to your in third person over the phone? With me it's usually "you"
Not caring about what pronouns people use for you is not problematic. You don't need to present specific pronouns to make others happy. Just need to respect that other people want to be described by them, which you do.
I confuse the opps by picking a new gender to display every time I make an account
@a_blanqui_slate@hexbear.net was very clear. You are not to refer to her by any pronouns otherwise y'all will get upset. I have no problem honoring its wishes.
it does sound stilted IRL and people are probably going to default to "they" in english anyway which is part of why i don't care enough irl even though genderless language is probably a better fit for me than "they" or some neopronoun.
They isn't genderless? Can you maybe explain that to me, I'd always thought it was.
gender-neutral and genderless are slightly different.
It is. You use it if you don't know a person's sex or preferred pronouns.
i had met someone with love/loves pronouns irl and it took every fiber of my being to avoid inflecting a scottish accent
was a pretty fun pronoun to use though, i liked it
A lot of those happened to be specific requests by particular users at the time pronouns were being added. There was a user who went by doe/deer and doe got deer pronouns added at deer request.
I think captcha means "Don't you dare refer to captcha in the third person"
