I fuckin love trying to restore the Roman Empire in CKIII. Something about painting a map like that makes me happy. Similar for HOI4.
I love CKII for all the wrong reasons: seduction of blood relatives, torture, assassination of children. Best game ever.
:side-eye-1: Looks at the thousands of hours in CKII :side-eye-2:
I'm struggling to decide if Grand Strategy games can really be counted as "sandbox". CK would definitely be the closest though.
I also have 2000+ hrs in C:S, the majority of which spent crafting socialist realist cities with excessive public transport infrastructure
Much of this can be achieved with mods - I myself have built countless cities with huge amounts of pedestrianised zones and with ample cycling infrastructure. You can even ban cars with the Traffic Manager mod, though it's tedious as you have to manually alter every stretch of road. Still doable
Paradox games are all great. Haven't played one that's disappointed. C:S is next on my list
I think it's the other way around.
I'm going by my own experience and that of the little corner of gaming youtube that is arguably some type of leftist and not hootin' and hollerin' chuds and while it's not like they avoid typical open world games, what they usually seem more interested in is what messages games convey, both by story and by mechanics.
Which doesn't necessarily exclude open world games entirely by any means, but there's a lot more to interpret from Fallout: New Vegas than Minecraft basically, to put forth well known examples.
I get how it can be taken as such, yeah.
What I meant was on the sliding scale of open world with Minecraft being at the very extreme and Fallout: New Vegas on a less extreme case I'd say leftist content tends to favour the latter over the former.
The synthesis is basically donoteat01 taking Cities: Skylines and endowing it with narrative to make a point.
I think that sandbox games are a subset of open-world games, to put it a bit differently.
I downloaded Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic because I heard about it on this site. I finally got the hang of train signals and I am all about it. I'm at the point that when I'm driving IRL I'm rubbernecking to check out the factories like yep, there's the power transformer and so on lol.
The V.I. Lenin Metallurgical Cooperative is the duty and pride of the people of Luhaszyk. The city has three main organizations, which is how I keep track of my distribution offices, busses, etc.
Luhaszyk Municipal Concern LMC- a concern is a state-operated enterprise. It is responsible for importing and exporting to the main railroad hub, the larger Luhaszyk Regional Concern. The LMC has the responsibilities of any local government include fire department, hospital, university, etc.
Miners Union Luhaszyk MUL- all workers cooperatives are responsible for pulling workers and resources to the job site. The final factory has conveyors directly to the LMC warehouse for distribution.
Citizens Union Luhaszyk CUL- the workers of Luhaszyk are also members of a citizens union to organize their recreational activity. CUL distributes groceries and other consumer goods as well as day trips to Luhaszyk's many museums and lakeside beaches.
i've put hundreds of hours into that game and still haven't actually got how it does train signals.
Me neither lol but after tinkering for hours and hours it just kind of clicked and everything works and it is so satisfying.
Also I don't think this explanation is the most efficient way but it completely stopped my stuck trains. Or maybe it was the last update...

Put double rail going everywhere
-
Use two-way normal signals to make both tracks at your end nodes two-way. Add a small X crossing between your tracks and then a line of one-way signals to lead to the intersection. (2 lanes like a road)
-
When your double track approaches an intersection put down a line of normal one way signals to break this section off. Split the double line into 4 tracks (sometimes more). Then make a pattern of X-crossings with enough space for any track to get to any track.

|X||X|
| | | |
||X||
| | | |
|X||X|
| | | |
Put in a new line of normal one direction signals pointing to/away left intersection and to/away right intersection. These will meet up with the forks of the other intersection and merge back into two lanes.
- Do the same for the other lines approaching this intersection.
I'm curious because I'm sure there is a more efficient way to do this. I did not use chain signals because I would rather have a train wait at the start of the intersection for it to clear up than to risk 2 trains blocking each other's way. But yeah this way anyone can go to any city and move past each other and I can have multiple trains loading and unloading at the same place.
i'm exhausted from a really long workday but i'm going to save your post and read it tomarrow and reconfigure my rail system. do you have any suggestions for when you have only a single track going off your main double track? like just a small spur that leads to a lumber yard or gravel pickup.

Valheim is so fucking good. My irl group of friends that I’ve been distant from have all gotten together and built massive cities. It’s the most fun I’ve had in a game in a very long time.
I would play Cities more but the mods keep on crashing the game lol
I think TheoTown is pretty sweet, it looks and performs like SimCity 2000.
Honestly those games really do scratch an itch of mine that no other game can. I sunk like 40 hours into Kenshi recently
I know Kenshi is technically a sandbox but it never felt like one to me in a weird way. The world is so weird that exploring it is super compelling. Also from the first time I made it to Okran Valley and the Holy Nation beat the shit out of me I knew what I had to do, which was levy a cadre of martial arts robots to overthrow them and free all the slaves, so I guess it felt like it always had a plot, or at least a purpose.
___ is to Rollercoaster Tycoon as Cities: Skylines is to SimCity.
Can someone fill in the blank for me? I played too much of the recent remaster (and sequels) of Rollcoaster Tycoon and was wondering if there's a better game out there.
Holy shit I’ve never invested that much time, but I’ll choose a city builder or strategy game over action/adventure any day.
Cities: Skylines, Civilization, Tropico, and Transport Fever 2 are my favorites. I don’t think I’ve ever connected that to me being a communist, but I like spending hours at a time trying to construct the perfect world that meets everybody’s needs.
Nice! I don’t have that kind of commitment anymore, but I played Civ 5 every day for 6 years and clocked in about 800 hours, so I feel ya.
Probably cuz the typical Gamer™ is obsessed with fashy CIA sponsored shooters. Leftists obviously wont like those nearly as much, so sandbox games are one of the largest genres after that.
