Or do you wash them right away?

I've worked at doing the dishes as I cook this last year and really appreciate the results.

Putting them on the counter instead of in the sink is the best strat I've found. That way they're on the counter mocking me instead of out of sight. Helps me to have a strict no dirty dishes in the sink ever, unless I'm cooking for a lot of guests or something
    Edit:
I put them on the counter until after I finish eating

If you consider throwing them away and buying new ones, then they've sat for too long. No, I would never do such a thing why would you even ask

Generally when you start filling your bathroom sink because the one in the kitchen is overflowing.

I wash the dishes when they start to get in the way, but I rinse them off first so they don't stink or have too much stuck on food. This reminds me of a type of guy I forgot existed, though.

I used to work with someone that only used disposable plates and silverware at their house. This was a well paid man in their 30s, and I knew for a fact they had a dishwasher. You can't have dishes sitting in the sink if you never need to wash them, I guess.

Too long is four days. Sometimes you're tired after work or whatever. But 4 days is so long that you can say it doesn't matter how tired you are those things smell

It depends. If there's food on them, 1 day. If they've been pre-rinsed and still have water in them or are soaking in water, maybe 2-4 days. If they've been pre-rinsed and don't have any water in them, potentially several weeks.

When you have no clean dishes of that type. An exception is when it is a large dish, and its sink placement hides the fact that you are currently out of spoons, as well.

I wash the thing I used to make the food before I eat and before all the shit sticks to the bottom of the pot or frying pan. makes it way easier to just have to wash 1 or 2 plates and silverware right after you're done eating.
