  • I'm not sure I understand the significance of the difference between preferred pronouns and gender identity in this sense. Saying "he/hims" to mean "people with male gender identity" makes sense to me on the surface. Aren't masculine pronouns for masculine people? Is it that some people use multiple sets of pronouns? Or I guess people who identify as gender fluid sometimes use he/him pronouns while not identifying as male? Not asking to contradict, just asking so I can better understand.

Edit: Thanks for taking the time to respond y'all! Makes total sense.

  • The performances! It's a straightforward adaptation that doesn't get wacky or play on your existing expectations of the story like most modern adaptations do. It's still funny because Alistair Sims can be a very funny actor, and the dramatic moments are very good too. The actor who plays Jacob Marley is also amazing. Lots of great faces, lol. And Alistair Sims voice is just incredible.

The special effects are serviceable (good even, but yeah, old.) If it has one flaw I think it might be a little earnest for modern audiences, but it is a good adaptation of the novel in that sense too. I definitely recommend giving it a shot!

  • Someone posted a link to this autobiographical comic about one of these schools on hexbear a while ago, I clicked on it an basically immediately spent the rest of the day finishing it. Completely horrifying and fascinating.

Content warnings for pretty much everything you'd expect from a true story about this incredibly abusive institution. Harrowing read.

  • Honestly, a cigar should go out if left alone and not smoked, so you could probably use the same one many times, and the smoke is pretty pungent so it probably would make the room smell good for a while! I don't think it would be wasted if you are enjoying it!

Maybe even better to burn a little bit of pipe tobacco in an incense plate or something, IMO pipe tobaccos tend to smell better and you could just burn what you want and waste less!

Otherwise there is probably some expensive male-marketed candles out there that smell like cigars and whiskey lol

  • IMO it totally holds up, except as an edgy piece of media from the aughts, prepare for R and F slurs, Asian characters with phonetically represented accent and L R transliteration, and some of the ambient transphobia of the era (surprisingly little of that, considering how ubiquitous that kind of joke was, but it's there.) And of course depression and suicidal ideation comes up often.

I think anyone who followed it at the time will expect that stuff, but I do want people who are new to it to have a content warning going in!
