Should I assume someone is an egg because they're a big fan of Evangelion? Like collect lots of figures from the show and such?

Cause I have a have a friend who I haven't seen in like a decade and I might headcanon them as an egg (or at least an egg last time I saw them) and for some reason that's basically my justification? Is that a stereotype? Not sure where I've gotten that idea. NGE didn't even appeal to me that much but I haven't really seen it since even being remotely aware of gender things.

I feel like if you haven't seen someone in a decade, unless they literally said they'd rather be a woman when you last knew each other, there's no reason to speculate they're an egg.

Oh, I don't seriously speculate. Its just a totally irrational thing I decided for no apparent reason. Isn't "headcanon" basically used to mean "I don't think its actually canon, but I'm pretending it is anyways"?

I just wanted to know if my excuse to believe it is based on an actual stereotype, like Fallout New Vegas players are trans, or totally just made up.

Ignore what these rational people are telling you.

Anyone who has seen an episode of EVA is scientifically an egg.

Conversely, if you are trans when you see EVA for the first time, it will turn you cis

There's more than zero crossover between eggs and Eva fans but I wouldn't say it's an automatic singnifier. Eva is one if not the biggest anime ip or one of the biggest so it has mass appeal. I'd say Gundam could be equated to a similar sized fanbase and I'd joke that the gay to straight ratio is pretty high.

Eva has a little textual support but it's mostly just a bit we do ^^
