Okay, look, right, I know Fallout 1's interface is a steampunk artdeco clusterfuck, but it's entirely mouse driven and the game is perfect ok. Yes the click & drag logic is absurd, yes pixel hunting for the Colt Rangemaster sucks, but a nuclear age CRPG with a system inspired by GURPS and structure inspired by JRPGs (overworld map w/random encounters -> town maps with NPCs and quests) is absolutely awesome. The combat never stops being fun in a brutal, pitch black kind of way, and the ability for the story to unfurl with whichever portions of it you find first or quests you choose to do is awesome. Fallout 1 is a top five banger okay, and I will not hear slander about it because Interplay dorks in 1997 made a messy wessy of the buttons at 640x480!!!! aubrey-rage-cry

i got gifted the game in 1998 when i was 8 years old. unsurprisingly it took me until 2015 to actually play the game, and then i ran into a bug that crashed the game when i entered Boneyard no matter what i did cri

I mean you already know Tactics Ogre for one, Xenoblade 1 is my actual favourite game ever though.

If I called any other games perfect it'd probably be... Void Stranger, Deus Ex, Ocarina of Time, Mario Galaxy, Divinity Original Sin 2, Disco Elysium, Diablo 1 (not 2, Diablo peaked at 1), House of the Dying Sun, Kid Icarus Uprising, Zeroranger, Touhou Imperishable Night, Armored Core 1, Berwick Saga (still need to play this one tbh but I guarantee you it'll be here when I do), Starcraft Brood War (I like 2 more, but I feel 1 is the one that's actually perfect), Pyre, Metal Gear Solid 1, and Pathologic. Probably a few more but I forgor

Pyre is an incredible visual novel sports game with what I would consider to be Supergiant's best narrative. The characters are all super compelling and personable so that you end out attached to them and genuinely care about whether they ascend, which then creates these lovely emergent narratives as you succeed and fail throughout the rites. And then it devastates you with its ending harder than anything else. It's genuinely one of the only 7 pieces of fiction to ever get me to ugly cry, the others being Xenoblade 1, Bastion, My Broken Mariko, The House in Fata Morgana, The Wheel of Time (don't ask how), and Umineko When They Cry.

In general a lot of my favourite games have these sorts of emerging narratives, I think it's what bideo games are best suited towards and imo any game that lacks one is working at a severe disadvantage as an example of perfection, the ones in my list which don't have it are just so good at what they do that I love them regardless.

Also I genuinely enjoy the sport gameplay it hits the weird sportsgame itch that Mario Strikers Charged put in me as a kid.

Okay but why is Pyre also fuckin, Mutant League Football, though? blob-no-thoughts Where did the funny isometric real-time-with-pause thing from Transistor go? Why is this fictional sport so weird?

I will say I sincerely appreciate your tastes and standards, prioritising emotional impact and emergent narrative sorta. I dig that, I kinda feel it albeit almost no game has managed to put me in an emotionally-impacted state.

                Weird sportsgame sunny-breakdown

If you want my joke not real reason it's that Pyre is criticising televised sports as culty. The actual reason is that sports games lowkey rule and the sorts of weird asinine rules that sports use are actually kinda like how weird and asinine occult rituals can be. Hence why it's so weird, it reinforces the main occult parts of the narrative which otherwise take a back seat for the revolution narrative.

Plus the spirit field murder sports gameplay is peak I'm afraid.

I'm flattered you appreciate my weirdo taste in things. It does kinda hit the mark on how I engage with these, I do have some games that are on there for pure fun reasons (Actually just Touhou really), but all the others had some genuine emotional or intellectual impact on me, and not just in the crying way. And that's part of why I like emergent narratives so much, they inherently get me to emotionally engage with the work more fully, to put myself into it a little. My first playthrough of Pyre was my first playthrough, I chose to constantly reload since I was a little baby and I chose who would ascend first. So when the game responded at the end with the song it genuinely fucked me up with how touching it was. My playthrough was seen, for once. In other games I roleplay so heavily because it's another way to create these narratives, I create elaborate characters to flesh out the experience of the playing the game. And some games create an emergent narrative purely through emotional manipulation. Armored Core 1 is a game about falling into debt because you suck and the controls are weird and then clawing yourself out as you become a hardened mercenary, or else get so in debt that you're sold to become a human experiment and try again. And that whole time you feel that desperation to stay afloat, to not fall further into your debt spiral. It's all just incredible, really, and I deeply love anything that pushes me in these ways.

makima-huh Yeah I guess, I dunno.... been a long time since I picked up a game and was more or less unable to play it. Wife and I preloaded it, excited for the new Supergiant game, and uh neither of us put more than five hours in I think.

Woah what the fuck, I am genuinely kind of blown away by this second paragraph. Granted my brain is slurry atm, but... I'm not really an rp person I guess, it sure as hell doesn't pop up for me in games, maybe it's an autism thing but that level of participation and creation in the narrative that you describe is entirely new to me, what the fuck.

Also I'm drunk from gabapentin and Idk if I like it pls help.
