Saw epilator posting, and it reminded me that I might need to break it out again, and I dread the thought. Even though I have an IPL in my house, I didn't realize just how racist it could be. I thought it just wouldn't work if skin was darker, which OK, it's worth a try, my skin isn't pale white but it's not super dark either, but apparently IPL can BLEACH SKIN??? Please tell me this doesn't actually happen most of the time ohnoes

The way that IPL and laser work is that they heat up dark hair more than the skin around it because dark pigments heat up more, which then torches the hair. In the case of laser, this actually includes permanent destruction of the hair follicle if done right, in IPL it usually doesn't because the impulse doesn't travel as deeply underneath the skin. As you can see, the core part of the concept is a contrast in coloration between the hair and the skin. This is why these treatments do not work on platinum blonde or grey hair, and why they are extremely difficult on red hair. This is also why they can cause bleaching on dark skin. That isn't something that usually happens when you're a cracker, and i know a Mexican girl with light olive skin who gets laser without problems, but my laser technician still used to cover up my birthmarks with a kind of light pencil when i got laser hair removal.

Although my skin might be a little darker, this is good to know, as I have olive skin as well. Just to clarify, do you know if she was getting laser done by a technician or if it was IPL? I figured that regular laser would probably work due to being more precise, but it would make it really assuring to know there were none of these issues with IPL.

She's getting laser at a dermatologist. I have very little experience with IPL because insurances do not cover it here and i don't have one of the home devices.
