DEMOS (Dialogovaya Edinaya Mobilnaya Operatsionnaya Sistema: Russian: Диалоговая Единая Мобильная Операционная Система, ДЕМОС, lit. 'Interactive Unified Portable Operating System') is a Unix-like operating system developed in the Soviet Union. It is derived from Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) Unix.

It's development was initiated in the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy in Moscow in 1982, and development continued in cooperation from other institutes, and commercialized by DEMOS Co-operative which employed most key contributors to DEMOS and to its earlier alternative, MNOS (a clone of Version 6 Unix). MNOS and DEMOS version 1.x were gradually merged from 1986 until 1990, leaving the joint OS, DEMOS version 2.x, with support for different Cyrillic script character encoding (charsets) (KOI-8 and U-code, used in DEMOS 1 and MNOS, respectively).

Initially it was developed for SM-4 (a PDP-11/40 clone) and SM-1600. Later it was ported to Elektronika-1082, BESM, ES EVM, clones of VAX-11 (SM-1700), and several other platforms, including PC/XT, Elektronika-85 (a clone of DEC Professional), and several Motorola 68020-based microcomputers.

The development of DEMOS effectively ceased in 1991, when the second project of the DEMOS team, RELCOM, took priority.

An archive of the DEMOS source code can found here: https://github.com/bpr97050/DEMOS There's some interesting comments and mailing list archives in that repository as well. :)

Honestly once i got used to the large amount of them and all of their names it turns out they're great as characters, I really like them. i also like the switching between art style from the armless little sprites to like a more mature version, its pretty cool. I think actually I like most of the trolls, and they're decently differentiated. The silly cross-time bulletins had me rolling lol too. Good stuff. I didn't expect this 2010 comic to make me actually laugh like out loud but sometimes it gets me.

I have watched that Con-Air scene three times now because I think its come up three times. The song has been stuck in my head for days now. Lol.

Just got the big reveal that apparently they created Earth. Pretty good reveal tbh. Troll romance sure is complicated!

yeah 12 new characters is really tough but thankfully they drip-feed you a lot of them. i think karkat, terezi and vriska as the lead-in to the trolls was a good decision and i love all of them.

i agree that the story is still incredibly funny. the parts where it's just karkat screaming at himself and then realizing he was right are some of my favorite pages. honestly i think karkat is my fav in general

troll romance is only the tip of the iceberg as far as romance goes. just wait

true, they are pretty great, i do like karkat screaming at himself lmao. i'm of course partial to Nepeta a little bit catgirl-heart , but Vriska and Terezi are also really interesting in their own ways.

oh wow, i am excited about this comment, thanks for saying - the quadrant system was truly inspired (and tbh even a bit relateable (not the kismesis one tho lol... yet)) so i am excited to see what else drops too

            nepeta is so sweet...

i fully relate to the quadrants lol. i recently had to cut someone off for leaning too heavy on the kismesis side of what i'm realizing was a blackrom thing we were doing... like i can handle it but it needs to have boundaries like everything else

Wow, thats fascinating. Its a little new to me but I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one relating to it. When i first saw it in the LGBTQIA+ wiki I was like "oh this makes sense" and then I saw the sources and was like "huh wait that comic about John having a convoluted inventory system?" and then when i read it I was like "I'm not a troll psch" and now I'm like "oh wait no maybe actually there is something here I'm relating to, especially the pale quadrant is something I need to explore more" but since I haven't read it all its hard to say I really understand it yet.

oh it's gonna take a second for sure but once you start really immersing yourself in these concepts, you're gonna start seeing them in your day to day life. best friends, moirails. if you've been in a large enough friend group you probably know two people who really don't like each other and have to have an intermediary, auspistices. obviously we know about human love, matesprits but it takes quite a bit to be infatuated with someone who intensely annoys you in a way that makes you question your own flaws

i confess that I think the draw for me to moirails specifically was that i've been feeling a need for a strong platonic connection for a while - someone who i'd consider a "best friend." there's a diamond shaped hole in me or whatever lol

i currently don't have much of a friend group (just a friend or two and some acquaintances I Board Game with once every couple of months) but thinking back to the past it does make sense!! i wonder how [homestuck creator] came up with this - is this a thing that most people are like or is it just some of us that work like this?

I'm curious about this ... what do you mean?

lol i heavily relate to the diamond-shaped hole. without getting too deep into it that's something i intensely desire and need to feel on some level.

i think every quadrant has some real-life basis to it because i've been in all of the quadrants on some level. like to explain kismesissitude and blackrom stuff in general, think about the relationship between vriska and terezi. they basically almost killed each other, always argued, but kept pushing each other further and further into their ideal versions of themselves. it's like a rivalry that involves some level of affection/romantic attraction through conflict. the problem is that it's incredibly volatile and spills over into actual vitriol really easily which is what happened with me lol

                      knight-nod

I think I've defs felt the redrom (but I think for me it's kinda atypical), definitely felt the pale and ashen (briefly), but I've been wondering if I'd had blackrom-like relationships like that in the past, but nothing comes to mind at the moment. But that's really interesting - someone pushing you into an ideal version of yourself lea-think I think that kind of antagonistic relationship would be really stressful for me, if I'm honest. And yeah the volatility makes sense too.

yeah it's not supposed to be healthy in like a human sense. it's like goku and vegeta but they're fucking. from personal experience it is incredibly stressful and incredibly rewarding
