Xenia, the fox girl mascot of Linux, was first designed in 1996 by Alan Mackey. She was meant to be an alternative to Tux, the official mascot.
She had fallen into obscurity, but was noticed by a Twitter user in 2019 and was redrawn as a fox girl. But as it turned out, Xenia was originally meant to be male! The original creator, Alan, was cool with this, saying "It matches the transition of a lot of the smartest, nerdiest Linux users I know" and "And sure, you made her trans!".
So now we have a trans Linux mascot. And I think that's neat.

I've been summoned. So actually it's completely outside of my preferred genres. I'm using it as a chill space to hang out and chat for peer support while having some fun activities that people can engage in. You can learn more about what I'm up to with that project on this post. The game was a bit of a learning curve for me (not that it's a hard game by any means) because I was completely out of my gaming comfort zone. (I'd say that I was like a fish out of water but that would be a bit too on the nose.) If it wasn't such a charming game I probably wouldn't have bothered to persevere with it tbh.
It's also hilarously woke in the best way possible:
So far the communities that I've come across have been super warm, welcoming, and very queer friendly too. I came across one person who was auDHD like me (because I seem to attract this type of person, although how that happened in game by pure chance idk) and who is studying sociology and international relations, so very much within my wheelhouse. We had this fabulous chat (or perhaps more accurately, a mutual infodumping session) and I even did some gentle agitation, recommending them the works of the anarchist Ivan Illich because it was relevant to the discussion. Not that I was there to proselytise or anything but it was just a natural "Hey, I think you'd really appreciate this guy's stuff" kinda thing. Edit: Oh yeah, we had a good chat about Israel too - this guy knew about former Israeli President Menachim Begin's role in the Zionist terroist organisation Irgun(!!) Colour me impressed.
Another server I joined was dunking on some clown who said "I don't do pronouns" after they had left lol.
It's a genuinely nice place to hang out. I rate it.
sadly I had a nightmare experience with a transphobe on the populated Irish server within 20 minutes of installing:( nobody else was even calling him out. i will probably revisit the game but that more or less ruined my day. gamers never change I guess, mind boggling in a game as woke as this like you say though. i gotta find some commie servers, been burned too many times venturing out of explicitly left wing online spaces.
That really sucks. Damn gamers, they ruined gaming!
It's really easy to make your own server though. Just name it something like Commie Turboqueer Toothbrush Kleptomanics and it will attract the right people. Plus if you create the server then you can boot people out of it if someone is being a shithead.
Also keep in mind that there's always room for one more in your blocklist. You don't have to put up with that bullshit. You don't deserve it.
i will probably give hosting one a go, that's one of the first things my mind went to. yeah it sucked, I'm sure I just got very unlucky considering the vibe of the game but I was hungry and in a bad mood and ended up getting in a scrap with them instead of just wisely muting. thanks for the kind words
Yelling at transphobes is always praxis. Don't let doing that steal your joy though. Reclaiming your peace is just as valid
The more I see, the more I want to play. Hopefully I can make it next time you host (I have class tommorow :sadness:)
That would be very cool.
I just made a goofy little promo image for the next post I'll make for the server. Keep an eye out for it soon!
