I've been using a 10 year old Turtle Beach gaming headset to listen to music because I prefer over-the-ear headphones over earbuds since they usually hurt my ears and it's all I got.

I second this. I have had a pair for about 5 years and they still work great. I use an ant lion mod mic for a mic. I play d&d online a lot so I needed a decent one.

I've had a pair of Sennheiser hd 280s. Sound great. Usually can get for like $80. Not very stylish but who cares.

If you want affordable but want the ability to hear as close to the original source as possible, the Sony Mdr 7506's are a standard headphone for music/radio/film and tv production.

Definitely recommend ath m50s. I have the bluetooth ones and I only have to charge them like once a week, with heavy listening (4-5 hours) a day. Sound quality is great, and they are very comfortable. They also come with a cord if you need one.

    The most important questions are:

    • Closed or open?

    • Type of music if you have a preference

    • Budget, by which I mean how much do you care about money vs. fancy? Headphones can get stupid expensive and I personally would never drop $500 on a pair, but some people spend $2k.

Assuming you're cool with open headphones, I recommend the Grado SR-60s. They're sub-$100, are easy to repair, and they sound great. Even better if you can find a sale.

If you want headphones that go all the way around your ears, the one to beat is the Sennheiser HD-600s. They're very expensive, though. You can sometimes find refurbished HD-580s for around $100 tho and they're essentially the same thing.

    For closed, ath m40x.

The Philips-SHP9500 are an extremely good pair of a more audiophile/hifi headphone, especially for the good price too, runs for about 70-100 bones depending on where you look.

Plus if you pair it with a vmoda boom pro mic , you basically have a headset that is better than 90% of headsets out there for only like 100 bucks

You might want to look into dacs and amps and stuff if you really want some quality for your music

The HyperX cloud 2 or something like that is good quality without being expensive as shit like TBs. It's pretty popular you should find it easy.

This. Or the DT990 if you want an open back pair. On top of everything OP said, they're also very comfortable.

Another vote for the ath m40x.

If you want to spend a bit more, dt770's + a cheap headphone amp

For over ears I’ve been wearing the Marshall headphones for years. I had the Majors (the first model they made), then I got major ii bluetooth ones. I got the monitors in Bluetooth last year, but I honestly think I preferred the sound on the majors, they’re a little more bottom heavy, maybe not a true studio sounds like the monitors, but honestly that extra oomph on bass and drums is good for the kind of music I like.

    The monitors are comfier though

If you're want GAMER microphone headphones the cooler master mh751s are very good. Theyre rebranded takstar pro 82s which are well regarded headphones. Also really really comfortable. The mdr7506s are really good too, and also very comfortable. I havent tried the shp9500s but Ivd heard great things about them too, theyre open back tho so probably not great for bass and you can't wear them in public
